C.<p>At 7pm last night, I looked out my window and was pleasantly surprised to note that the sky wasn't black, but instead had a hint of darkest blue to it. Days are getting noticeably longer, and after a dark, cold winter, that's always welcome in the prairies.</p><p>Then this morning I looked at the weather forecast - and the daily highs for the whole week are at the freezing point or above! Not a negative sign to be seen. That's a nice surprise, too. Younger folks won't remember indoor TV aerials affectionately called "rabbit ears", but the name was apt.</p><p>Here's a white-tailed jackrabbit - which yes, is actually a hare, not a rabbit - who has his ears up monitoring for threats while he munches some food. They turn to face different directions to focus sound from, like a radar dish, and they both operate independently. C.<p>There were actually seven jacks in view in my backyard when I took this picture, but I only got these three[*] in the frame. It struck me as funny because they're each looking at the next one with their back turned.</p><p>You can see the bunny highways running through the yard, marked by many tracks and plenty of rabbit poops. The one in the middle is sitting in the middle of one of the busier tracks, because after it goes behind that tree, it leads to where I have a gate in that fence. The jacks squeeze through between the gate and the post of the fence to get in and out of my yard from the green space on the other side.</p><p>[*] There's actually four in this frame. The slightly furry-looking bit of snow between the blurry bunny and the edge of the frame is actually another jack who hopped straight through. I think he knows it. He's looking dead at me in the first photo, because I'm five meters away with a device that's making weird clicky noises and I'm moving a bit.</p><p>In the second picture, you can see their <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/fuzzy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fuzzy</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/lips" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lips</span></a> are exactly like a domestic rabbit's.</p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wildlife</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/yard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>yard</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/backyard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>backyard</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/animal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>animal</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/bunny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bunny</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/SK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SK</span></a> Canada <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/winter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winter</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/rabbit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rabbit</span></a></p>
C.<p>More <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Canadian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canadian</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/prairie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prairie</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/jackrabbits" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jackrabbits</span></a> (again, actually a kind of <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/hare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hare</span></a>, not <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/rabbit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rabbit</span></a>...) from my wintry yard today.</p><p>These two handsome fellers (or gals, who knows?) are in the front yard, looking at me through my open front door. One's got a skinnier head than the other. Dunno if that tells me anything. They all keep some dark markings on their ears and nose when they turn white for the winter, but there's a lot of variety in terms of how much and where else they keep a bit of colour.</p><p>Again, these are probably Lepus townsendii, the White-tailed Jackrabbit. There are also Lepus americanus, the Snowshoe Hare, in the prairies, but I think they're mostly further north than me, up where the trees start in what we call the "parkland" area. I'm in the middle of the "grain belt", which is bald prairie for the most part.</p><p>I have a bunch more of these, plus some videos which need trimming. Captioning these takes some effort so it might take me a while to work through them.</p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wildlife</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/yard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>yard</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/backyard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>backyard</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/animal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>animal</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/bunny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bunny</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/SK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SK</span></a> Canada <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/winter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winter</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/jacks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jacks</span></a></p>
