First was a fantastic pair of conversations with Albert Churella on the history of the Pennsylvania Railroad company from 1917 to its unceremonious demise following its disastrous merger with New York Central at the Hagley Museum and Library. This has it all - corporate strategy, industry dynamics, fascinating government deals, crazy M&A, and the genesis of the Amtrak system. Highly recommend

My family worked for the #railroads for three generations (my dad, his dad, and his mom's dad). It broke our hearts when privately owned railroads (#UnionPacific, specifically) gave up on passenger rail back in 1971. It's breaking my heart to see #Amtrak on the verge of being destroyed. Privatizing Amtrak is going to mean eliminating it. Private railroads stopped passenger service because it wasn't profitable. Who believes that's going to change?

A straight-on shot depicts a railway track disappearing into a thick, enveloping fog. The two parallel rails, made of metal, stretch into the distance, gradually fading into the dense, grey mist. The tracks are set on a bed of dark, coarse gravel, which is visible along the sides and between the rails.
Overhead, thin cables, likely power lines for an electric train, run parallel to the tracks, also disappearing into the fog. The fog itself fills the entire frame, creating a uniform, featureless grey background that obscures any distant scenery.
Two indistinct, dark shapes are visible on either side of the tracks, likely signal posts or other railway infrastructure, further obscured by the fog. SN F-units at Niles
Set of Athearn Genesis HO Sacramento Northern (SN) F-units at the Tri-City Society of Model Engineers model railroad in the historic Niles depot in Fremont, CA on Friday night, February 28, 2025.
The real SN 301-A was an EMD F3A. Reportedly, it was built in 1948 as NYO&W 501, builders number 3146. Purchased in 1957 it became SN 301-A. It was retired circa 1970, traded to EMD.
