This was a pure 80s delight, RIP Val Kilmer.
This was loosly inspired by actual events at CalTech. When Lazlo sent in numerous entries to the Frito-Lay contest, it's based on 3 CalTech students in 1974 who did it with McDonald's. Even with a machine in the studio dedicated to doing nothing but making popcorn, it took 3 months to make it all.
Sigh...I need to keep working...but all I want to do is heat up a big thing of jiffy pop with a giant laser and listen to Everybody Wants to Rule the World on endless repeat... #RealGenius #ValKilmer
“It’s a moral imperative.”: Sad to see the news of Val Kilmer's death. While he did a lot of good stuff over the years, my personal favorite is and has always been one of his earlier films, Real Genius. https://michaelhans.com/eclecticism/2025/04/02/its-a-moral-imperative
RIP #ValKilmer.
#RealGenius has a special place in my heart.
I watched #ValKilmer in the theaters when I saw #TopSecret! in 1984. I was a preteen and went with my grandmother...suffice to say, I didn't get it, but my grandmother hated it. I had yet to discover the #ZuckerAndAbrahams' over-the-top style of #TheKentuckyFriedMovie and #Airplane!, which I soon came to love. The dashing Kilmer also soon became a favorite via #RealGenius. What a tremendous talent. And what an underwater bar-fight scene! RIP Val.
Real Genius was one of those formative anarchistic experiences in my youth that should be required viewing for anyone going into STEM.
Now more than ever we need scientists who have the courage to sabotage US defence projects and destroy the homes of assholes with popcorn.
I Toxic Waste too, Val

A big thanks to @tillybridges for recently discussing #RealGenius on her podcast, so I got to enjoy one last dose of #ValKilmer's actual genius before his death.
RIP to Val Kilmer tonight.
It sounds silly, but I can’t understate how important Real Genius was to me as a young kid and how influential it was for me throughout my life.
I’ll make sure to make an extra big batch of popcorn.
I was just thinking earlier of fun lines from movies for a hash tag game and his delivery of a line from #RealGenius popped into my head early on: In the immortal words of Socrates, “I drank what?”
#RealGenius was the only movie that ever got the feel completely right for what a place like MIT or CalTech is like. #ValKilmer played Chris Knight to perfection in it. RIP.
I never thought this could happen. I never thought I could feel this way. Until this strange reaction today.

Relief to read that there's hope, even for the village idiot, that the wall is the same for all, we just have to keep banging our head through it...

First heard during the greatest montage ever. :)
New episode of Anomaly Presents!
This time we talk about one of our fav 80's college comedies, REAL GENIUS, and the natural charm of star Val Kilmer.
Listen to this one. It's a moral imperative. Also it's just fun.
