When #Apple releases a new generation of #hardware, I like to see how the Apple Tax is holding up. The new #Mac #Mini doesn't disappoint - all figures in CDN$.

Upgrade from 24 to 64GB of RAM: $750. Retail price of 64GB of RAM: $250.

Upgr. from tiny 512GB SSD to 8TB: $3000. Retail price of fast 8TB SSD: $900.

Price for maxed-out Mini M4: $6,000 without display, keyboard, mouse, or extra software.

Apple Store online listing for the new M4 Mac Mini, showing upgrade prices for memory and storage. This is for one of the upper models, so the base memory is 24GB and base storage is 512GB. The upgrade to 64GB of RAM - what I have in my current workstation - is $750. The upgrade of the SSD from 512GB (which is laughably small for a high-end machine) to 8TB is $3,000. For comparison, here are prices for 64GB DDR5 memory kits. A full 64GB, not just an upgrade from 24 to 64. There are three kits shown in this picture, with prices of $224, $276, and $285. So the upgrade price on the Mac is three times the price of actually buying the full amount at retail. This is the Apple Tax in action.
For comparison, here are retail listings for a fast 4xPCIe4 8TB SSD. The prices shown here are $985 and $880, compared to $3000 just for the upgrade if you buy the Apple Mac Mini and want 8TB of storage. The Apple Tax at work again.
And just for sh*ts and giggles, here's a Mac Mini M4 maxed out with the Apple Store configurator. $6000 is a lot of money for a Mac Mini. Keep in mind that doesn't include a display, or even a keyboard or mouse/trackpad. You can buy a heck of a workstation for six grand. Apple Tax!
