The ocean near Thessaloniki for #meermittwoch

I was there for a conference and immediately fell in love with the city and the sea, which is also characterized by the huge port.

Also, I drank way too many Greek frappés...

Back to 2018 for #MeerMittwoch today, and this was coming out of Kagoshima Bay on the south side of Kyushu island, Japan. We'd spent the day in Kagoshima, visiting the Sakurajima volcano and Sengan-en gardens, and it was lovely to see this other volcano, Kaimondake, silhouetted against the dusk sky on the cruise away.

It's evening, just after sunset at sea with the horizon marked by a pale, narrow band of distant cloud glowing orange at its upper edge before fading through light gold and white to a dusky blue of clear sky as it reaches up to the top of view. The sea is calm, rippled, and inky black now that sun is below the curve of the Earth. Land stretches across the view of the horizon from the right about two thirds of the way. It's mostly low land with rises and falls of a hilly landscape in a couple of shades of grey-blue silhouette, but there's a volcanic mountain peak at the far left, almost perfectly triangular, its very top brushing the orange-gold band of glowing sky above the far off cloud line. It feels like a warm day that's suddenly cooled but it's quiet and relaxing.
