Let's get those #solarpanels wired in today, and meanwhile, let's dig us out of a locked overdraft once again! Can we do $500 today? #mutualaid is very essential right now, and heavily appreciated as we build our home, our workspace, our rescue and escape vehicle, our self sufficiency and more all in one.

You're awesome people and I've heard from you how sone of you are just giving back after years of needing aid yourselves. We'll be giving back and so much more with the Vulpibus complete and our gene editing tech built. I hope to do you all proud.

FairyHut off-grid

I was so fed up with Ilha Madeira still producing electricity with more than 70% fossils, 53% of that diesel (*triplefacepalm*), I couldn't wait to get off of it.
Smol money, smol start :)

Phase I: Oct. 2023 4 panels hybrid 7.5kW

Phase II: Dec. 2023 +4panels, off-grid

Phase III: Nov. 2024 +4panels, 11kW

My battery hoard so far consists of a 20kWh LFP pack, 5kWh LFP pack (as a UPS for refrigerators, freezers and PCs), 40kWh AGM bank (in off-grid shop that can be interconnected to the house batteries in an emergency), and 60kWh in my EV (with a 12v-54v DC converter to feed the other batteries via "camping mode" in an emergency). They are all able to be interconnected via a series of (3) Schneider XW6848 inverters and share energy during a long term outage.

Shelling this year's harvest of fava beans. I didn't know what #fava beans or also called "broad beans" were a couple years ago, but I found them while looking for food to grow that can save water use, that is, like plants from Mediterranean climate zones. They not only grow well during our Winter rainy season in So Cal on little supplemental irrigation but help improve soil fertility. They are also a plant that has been grown for 10,000 years. Why you don't see these in our McGrocery stores is explain by online search as this: They need to be shelled and then preferably par boiled and skinned. Oh no! Work. They are delicious, though, even raw, and they are nutritious. They taste more like peas than beans. Gonna probably make some hummus with this batch.

I love it when 8minute old photons push electrons through the solar panels so I can stuff those electrons into an EV battery.
There is more than enough power on a sunny winter day in Melbourne to charge a home battery and an EV battery at the same time from 14kW of panels on the roof. I’m thinking that I will not need to buy power to charge the EV for the foreseeable future.

It is No Spend January on the homestead.

This means-- aside from the obvious of not spending money-- that it is time to get creative with what we have in the freezers and pantries.

There is very minimal spending allowed, and it is really only if necessary for fresh produce. This is fine.

I made a batch of potato and onion soup that I have been eating through, as well as having eaten a small piece of the family's pot roast last night. Tonight, they had sausage and potatoes.

While looking through what we have, I decided to make butter with the heavy cream we had leftover from another project... which lead to the next plan of making a crusty Italian bread tomorrow that can be eaten with the soup, dipped in oil, or slathered in butter.

Not one to be known to take on an appropriate amount of projects simultaneously... homemade beef jerky is also on the menu for tomorrow. I figure the jerky is a good protein packed snack that will last for a bit, and even longer if I vacuum-pack it.

Wish me luck!
