Did you know it took 747 years between the 1st & 2nd attempts to separate #conjoined #twins?

In 942, during the #Byzantine #Empire, a conjoined twin suddenly died. A #surgeon decides to operate. Initially, it was successful, but the remaining twin died after 3 days.

Then, in 1689, twin girls joined at the belly button, were operated on.

Despite being the first recorded attempt since #LateAntiquity, the operation was a #success!

This is an ink drawing from the Codex Skylitzes Matritensis which shows the Byzantine separation of twins. The painting is simplistic and colourful. It shows six men, four of them surgeons and two twins. The surgeons are all dressed in long tunics, three in black and one in blue. The tunics reach their ankles and are bordered there in gold. Each surgeon also wears a red cloak and a white cap. The drawing does not show hair. All four yield a long knife, reminiscent of a vegetable knife, with a wooden handle. They stand before two naked men. One turned towards the four doctors, is dead, with his limbs hanging loosely from his body, and his face turned to the ground. His conjoined brother is attached on the backside and thus facing away from the doctors. He holds a staff of some kind and his gaze is turned upwards as if in prayer.
