i think i’m giving up on online #book #tracking services; so i’m looking at local apps.

what i would like is something with a clean, simple interface to record
- books i want to read (maybe with a note where i heard about it from),
- books i have (and in which formats/editions),
- and books i’m reading (including start/end date, comments/highlights and a simple rating)
- need to be able to correct/adjust/merge metadata of the books

don’t need much else. trying out Sofa on iOS for now i think

Non-EU sites giving you this welcome ...

That "legal reason" argument... is bul***t

Their legal reasons is that they are not allowed to track you without your knowledge and your consent. And that is why they block you when you're visiting the site from EU. Because #GDPR requires sites to notify you of such possibilities.

The solution is simple: DON'T TRACK!

But there's no money in that. And if they had allowed you to visit and ignore GDPR they fear the EU would chase them down and give them a solid fine.

So if they can't earn money on you or they risk getting a fine when you visit their site, they rather tells you to «F*** of*!» and go somewhere else.

That's how valuable the tracking is for them. And it gives you nothing back.

So "legal reasons" .... yeah, right!

@maxleibman “Dear Businessperson,

If the mundanity of my online comings and goings is of such interest to you, it must be valuable. I’m willing to entertain offers for me to provide this service. Your offer should include a fixed fee payment per month, a fee per transaction, and a % of the advertising revenue that results from the use of my information and/or any derivative data products. The license to my information is non-exclusive. …”

I’ll add the early cancellation fee etc. later.

Did I leave anything out?

#Woolworths forced a Rewards app upgrade, and it now turns the screen brightness way up on the main screen, then back to my settings on subsequent screens, then back to VERY BRIGHT each time in the main screen.

Combined with the constant thousands of tracking attempts, it's like they don't want you to use it.

Thank you to the Duck Duck Go browser for showing me the constant barrage of tracking which Woolworths does - orders of magnitude worse than any other app 🤮

Ah, I had "fun" the other day. I was looking for various resources about a health condition.

#HealthLine is usually pretty good. Except I have #tracking off, ads off and I'm in a GDPR zone.

Apparently HealthLine cannot create a website which functions without tracking, ads or cookies.

It's quite simple, you open a text document and start it with <!doctype html> and go from there. Make links to other pages...

No. They basically admit to not being able to build a WEBSITE. 🤣
