But seriously, #Trackmania (2020) is a shitshow. Filled to the brim with tracking ads to the point it completely distracts you from the track (unless you pay for a subscription, because owning a game? Not in Ubisoft world!), the physics engine is the 'beloved mess' grown since Nations ESWC with its "bug slides" etc, Ubisoft introduced all their software garbage as well… just a horrible experience. A good game that gets completely drowned in garbage and unfixed code.

it’s incredibly self-sabotaging!

from the perspective of a new player with no club access it’s awful all around

  • the tutorial is awfully outdated and barely covers the absolute basics, especially now that you have more vehicles

  • you can’t learn to play the campaign maps, since the blue, red, and black series are now locked behind club access

  • you can’t use custom car skins

  • you can’t see your friends’ scores in the few campaign maps you’re allowed to play

  • you can’t play custom maps, which is where trackmania really shines

  • you can’t practice and play maps with your friends on your servers without having to do very very weird LAN shenanigans which disqualify you from setting records on maps

  • you get real-life, non maniaplanet ads in the race billboards, which potentially violate GDPR since you can’t opt-out from their tracking without club access

  • you can somehow bypass these limitations while playing ranked or royal, but playing ranked on maps you haven’t practiced otherwise is pretty much pointless, and royal has been turned into a joke of a gamemode ever since the last changes (unless they’ve recently rolled them back, it’s been a while since i’ve played and having changelogs only on X-formerly-twitter and sometimes french doesn’t help)

good luck getting somebody to spend 20 € / year when the base game experience is this!

It's cathartic to do #Lutris scripts right now, so I've added basically anything you could wish for to play #Trackmania #TrackmaniaSunrise on Linux. Including a CD-less installer - probably useful for most people nowadays. :blahaj:
codeberg.org/Natanox/lutris-in

"DLC" installers not yet on lutris.net as they throw some fully ignore-able errors (and sometimes generate a second starter in Lutris for some reason, can be safely deleted).

What's the easiest way to detect what DLLs wine tries to access? Preferably just the names of the files, a deep dive into gdb ain't what I would love to do.
It just says "failed initializing DLLs", but not which ones.

I don't need Starforce to actually *work*, the services just have to be running.

The DRM fixer for #Trackmania Original didn't patch it out completely, but merely disabled the actual CD check. It still wants the driver.
