4/8. MC POV: What are the 3 most important things you always take with you when traveling (besides money, ID and keys if applicable)?

In book I Diane has her favorite gun, The Beast, her plain bowler hat, and — just in case — another gun.

Amy carried the money. They don’t have anything that locks. In the American west of the 1840’s there was no state-mandated ID.

FINALLY!

I have been waiting for them to release a trailer for this! I am so hyped!

John Maclean's Slow West (2015) was such a surprise and showed how a solid script, great acting and an ambitious director could over come a small budget.

It was a fantastic, somewhat surreal, #western that left a lasting impression.

Now we have Maclean's newest #film, Tornado, a samurai revenge western that takes place around Britain of the late 1700’s.

CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS!!!

Reuploaded because I didn't realize Pixelfed would crop the aspect ratio. Photos from a historically themed shoot about Irish immigrants in the U.S. going west in the 19th century. Before anyone comes at me for it, I know buscaderos are not historically accurate, but I'm a poor photographer, so I used what costumes and props I can get my paws on.

4/7. Does your MC have a secret? Can you give us a hint?

A significant portion of the character arcs are uncovering their own secrets. Horrors and uncanny events can get cloaked in shame or fear. Details are slippery because what’s happening doesn’t mesh with the character’s previous conception of the world. Until they know the truth, it’s an involuntary secret.

Do you know the history of eugenics in the #western world?

Because you absolutely should, #asap. It will show you that the same reason we are seeing an influx of transphobia, anti-abortion legislation / reproductive rights and overall gender discrimination is the same reason we’re seeing…

4/6. SC POV: Are you capable of killing a person?

Most of the SCs are not blood-thirsty monsters. Some of them are. A few teeter on the fence.

For example, Mueller the mercenary certainly is capable of killing and looking at killing both Amy and Diane. Diane sees this all too clearly. Things don’t go well for him.

4/5. What’s the most important thing about world-building for you?

It’s the US West in the 1840’s. World-building options are limited. It’s horror, so world-building is necessary. But only near the fringes of our conscious awareness.

What inspires me most are distinctive locations. Place is a character, putting some additional meaning on the action.

4/4. Whose advice about your writing would you follow?

For non-fiction, I have a bunch of tech reviewers and editors. I follow their advice assiduously. Back when I had a day job, I took advice from colleagues, also.

For fiction, I have a beta reader. I read aloud to my partner. This gives us (both) a in-depth look at story structure and writing technique. That’s self-study, not advice, but I find it helpful.
