Did you know that the first #European #workhouse had a nasty surprise for the work-shy?
The 'Rasphuis' was opened in 1596 in #Amsterdam. It was designed to reform delinquent youth & beggars.
If an inmate proved to be reluctant to work, they would be sent to the cellar, which would be flooded.
They were handed a hand pump, to get rid of the water - or drown.
(The existence of the cellar is disputed.)
This is a #workhouse in #London from the 19th century. Note the overtly Christian slogans on the walls (but no other art/decor whatsoever), and consider that cameras back then were big, bulky things so the photo would have been taken with the full blessing of those running the place. It wouldn't surprise me if this is what some areas of USA would have planned for their homeless folk (TBH they'd try the same in Europe if it wasn't for the human rights laws)
