I couldn't find an existing list of Canadian alternatives to American Internet services, so I've started one:
https://codeberg.org/Taffer/canadian-alternatives
Please spread far and wide, and let me know if you have any updates for the page!
@Taffer
Great list!
For a maps app, there’s Transit. It isn’t a full Google Maps/Apple Maps alternative, but it’s amazing for public transportation. Based in Montréal.
@justinlachance thanks, I’ll add them!
@Taffer You can add CakeMail to your list of eMail marketing companies. :)
@JustinDerrick thanks, I’ll add them!
@JustinDerrick @Taffer I was just about to suggest CakeMail, they’re not just Canadian, but have a pretty good ui for actually composing mail.
@Taffer "Password Managers (1Password, BitWarden, LastPass)" - 1Password *is* Canadian :)
@msinilo yeah, not sure why I thought they were in Silicon Valley; updated!
@Taffer There some list in newspaper(pain in the ass to find all the article), found also https://isthiscanadian.ca/index.php
@mikeTesteLinux thanks, I’ll dig through there!
@Taffer You should add National Capital FreeNet to your list of eMail providers. Great service, I started with them during dial-up days and have been with them ever since (they resell Bell and Rogers internet these days as well as eMail).
https://www.ncf.ca
@SheamusPatt wow, I’d forgotten about them, thanks!
@Taffer Under web hosting you might include Green Geeks: &
!
@GrumpusNation awesome, thanks!
@GrumpusNation GreenGeeks looks awesome, but their mailing address is in Delaware... I think they just might have a .ca presence. Looks like their main datacentre is in Chicago.
@Taffer Under cloud services and/or web hosting is Carbon60, Toronto/Vancouver based.
@GrumpusNation thanks, I’ll add them!
@Taffer hey great, thanks for doing this. Maybe we should include some European resources as well.
@Bwacton there’s a link to the European website at the top, maybe I should add a Euro flag or something
@Taffer
Hosting: FullHost (https://www.fullhost.com/)
DNS: Control D (https://controld.com/)
VPN: Windscribe (https://windscribe.com/)
@wdenton thanks, I’ll add them!
@wdenton thanks I’ll add them!
@Taffer awesome, thanks
@Taffer hey can you please add #podcasting to the list and add transistor.fm @mijustin has a superior product and it’s made in #canada every #Canadian #podcaster should switch to this product.
@Taffer Two Canadian web hosting services I've been considering migrating to lately:
https://www.halihost.ca/
https://websavers.ca/
@brownpau thanks, I’ll add them!
@Taffer Hmmm, I thought Fastmail was Australian, and doublechecking Wikipedia, I saw that they're _based_ in Australia but their _servers_ are located in the States. So even if their HQ isn't here, their data is. As someone who's been actually using Fastmail, this is critical to know.
Also totes boosting this, since several Canadians follow me who could also possibly offer suggestions!
@Taffer This is GREAT! Thank you!
@Taffer
namespro and hostpapa both offer domain/web hosting. (Email too, but it sucks)
For translation, Government of Canada’s Termium site is a good resource for figuring out the nuance in individual terms between English and French (but definitely isn't a translation service!)
@Centretowner thanks, I’ll add those!
@Taffer
Namespro.ca, for DNS section.
@bjb thanks, I added them this morning!
@Taffer Thanks, I’ve been looking for something just like this!
@Taffer I believe Fathom Analytics is Canadian-owned. https://usefathom.com/about
@anaxamaxan thanks, I’ll add them!
@Taffer Thanks for putting this together! Grape.ca is another Canadian domain registration, web hosting and email provider, based in Ontario. I can only vouch for the domain registration services personally. (Happily they bill in CAD, unlike Hover )
(also sorry for reposting this if you saw the first one! Wanted it public)
@ionothanus thanks, I’d forgotten about them!
@Taffer May I suggest Devolutions (devolutions.net) under Password Manager. We are based in Quebec.
@ekse thanks. I’ll add them! Merci!
@Taffer Shopify should also be on that list.
@ekse thanks; suppose I should add them despite their fascist leadership
@Taffer This is brilliant. Thanks.
@Taffer hi! I work for a small SMB that does web hosting, you can look us up if ever: Horizon-Cumulus.com
@sekhmetdesign thanks, I’ll add them!
@Taffer How about Mojeek for an alternative search engine? UK-based, operates its own crawler-based index, privacy focused, launched in 2004. I admit I have not used it myself but it seems to be the only search engine in the world not based in the US, CN or RU.
@jeremyjanzen nice! I think they’re listed on the European alternatives website
Good initiative.
Be the light you want to see. And sometimes this light is a Molotov cocktail.
@bougiewonderland @chris awesome, thanks, I’ll add those!
