Welcome this episode of "Ask Mastodon".
I'm looking for a good web based RSS reader.
1) Web based
2) Not Feedly
3) Not self-hosted
4) Not filled with AI bullshit
Please read criteria carefully before replying.
@grumpygamer Willing to pay for it?
@grumpygamer I use @Inoreader and have been using it for years, well worth the money
@gabrielesvelto @grumpygamer @Inoreader I use innoreader too but it's starting to give me feedly vibes
I'd look at feeder if I were going to change
@grumpygamer I can't vote!
@grumpygamer firefox addon called Feedbro. Horrible name, great addon. On android enjoying Feeder via f-droid
@dbat @grumpygamer Great add-on thanks for the recommendation. Bullshit name
@nacsan @grumpygamer it is a bad name. I only tried it cos i ran out of patience with all the other rss addons.
@dbat @grumpygamer Thanks for this! I happened to be looking for an RSS reader when I saw Ron's post that lead me here.
Feedbro seems like exactly what I'm looking for so far.
The name is as good as "Rambro", "Brominator", "Brobocop" ... See #Broforce for reference
@grumpygamer I'm using CommaFeed. While it can be self-hosted, you can just sign up at commafeed.com as well.
@grumpygamer Unfortunately in German, but hey, AI will help: https://www.heise.de/ratgeber/Acht-RSS-Reader-im-Vergleich-10222756.html
@grumpygamer I've been using Inoreader since the demise of Google Reader and it's been a good replacement.
@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place I actually don't know very much about the AI part, although at a quick search it seems they prefer the human touch instead of the AI craze: I use Inoreader.
Web-based, check.
Not Feedly, well.. duh, check.
Not self-hosted, check.
Not filled wiht AI bullshit, I think also check.
The only downside is that they sometimes in certain times (Black Friday, Xmas) advertise their premium features a bit aggressively.
@grumpygamer one option is to just send your feed to RSS-Parrot here on Mastodon.
More info at: https://rss-parrot.net/
@grumpygamer I've been using https://miniflux.app since I left Feedly, it's been good! (I pay for the hosted version. $15 a year)
@grapefrukt @grumpygamer Another vote from me.
@obrhoff @grapefrukt @grumpygamer started using miniflux based on comments in this thread. Pretty much just what I wanted. Management of feeds is a bit cumbersome, but really not something I'd do often outside of initial set up.
@grapefrukt @grumpygamer I use the paid version of miniflux too. Simple and clean. It integrates quite well with an iOS app called Reeder.
@grumpygamer I use The Old Reader and it seems to ticks all your boxes.
https://theoldreader.com/
@temptoetiam @grumpygamer +1 from here for theoldreader, with the same timeframe
@temptoetiam @grumpygamer same here, theoldreader user since Google shut down their reader
@grumpygamer I am using NewsBlur. It works ok. I have not been using it long enough to utilize any but the most basic features. I started using it so I could follow Molly White and Pluralistic, but liked reading the news with no ads or downloads (that I know of).
@bizcad @grumpygamer +1 for NewsBlur. I've been using it for several years and have been happy, after being disappointed with Feedly, The OldReader, and InoReader. There's also a Firefox plugin (if you use Firefox) that will indicate if there are unread feed items, so you don't have to keep the page open all the time.
@grumpygamer inoreader. It has AI, apparently, but I haven’t seen any AI in it. It’s what I ditched Feedly for a few years back.
@grumpygamer I've used https://theoldreader.com (the $25/yr plan) for a little under two years now, after jumping ship from Feedly, and have been happy with it. On desktop I read it from a pinned browser tab, on mobile there are multiple apps that can connect to it. Unless they're hiding it well, it contains zero AI bullshit.
@grumpygamer iirc their free plan allows up to 100 feeds, which may be more than enough for anyone who hasn't been using RSS for 20+ years.
@grumpygamer @feedbin https://feedbin.com works well for me since I moved there 11 years ago. (edit: added mastodon handle)
@grumpygamer I use Commafeed and i find it perfectly serviceable
@grumpygamer I use the Feedbro and RSS Feed Reader extensions on Firefox. I'd probably stick with Feedbro, given how much RSS Feed Reader's been crashing on me lately.
@grumpygamer Feedbin is simple and elegant, IMO. No AI, no self-hosting.
@grumpygamer I use newsblur just for RSS feeds, ignoring other features
I also use Newsblur and am happy with it. One of the "other features" can act something like a topic mute, which is nice for my purposes.
@naga @grumpygamer yes topic mutes are wonderful if like me i'd like to see some RSS only from time to time if there's something interesting but the feed gets a lot of traffic...
@grumpygamer Welcome to this episode of "alternative to"
https://alternativeto.net/software/feedly/?feature=web-based
@grumpygamer I'm a happy Miniflux user, been using it for a good few years now. It can be self hosted, but there is a hosted version for $15/year.
@grumpygamer @joepie91 FreshRSS
Newsblur
Not necessarily in that order
@grumpygamer FreshRSS is available through a number of community-run servers. I've used the hosted version happily for years.
@grumpygamer Big fan of Feedbin - been using it for years and it costs $5 a month so you know there's less pressure to add *any* AI
@grumpygamer http://feedbin.com - Feedbin: Rock solid for over 10 years now
@grumpygamer Thank you for asking this because your replies have already given me a replacement for Feedly and its AI bullshit
@grumpygamer how the heck do you jam AI into RSS, anyway? That’s like putting AI into ls or cat or something
@CarlMuckenhoupt @grumpygamer Feedly has had that AI bullshit for a while now. In its case, it recommends feeds to you and you can (if you pay for it!) assemble dynamic feeds based on the AI scraping the net or something in that vein.
@grumpygamer Another vote for Feedbin. Been using it for ~12 years, from the very beginning. Nowt fancy, just works.
Edit: oh, it’s gotten fancier. Also, more expensive.
@grumpygamer I'm using @feedbin since it launched. I can highly recommend it.
Mighty filters are helpful if you follow a feed but don't like specific posts. Or want to filter specific words in sind or all feeds.
That you can subscribe to Newsletters there is a nice bonus.
Newsblur. I love it, been using it for years. Worth the money. :)
@grumpygamer I still use liferea, but it's not web based, the other criteriums are respected...
It does seem installable under mac:
https://ports.macports.org/port/liferea/
Basically, it's just an app, a local rss reader.
@grumpygamer Happy Feedbin user since Google killed Reader.
@grumpygamer Another vote for Newsblur from here. Been using it – the free version – for years and years. It mostly does nothing, just shows mee thee RSS feeds and I like it just because of it.
@grumpygamer Try FreshRSS, there ist a free Instance on bsd.cafe
@grumpygamer or i can provide you a testflight on my bsdbox.de
A friend recommended FreshRSS to me this week.
Edit: you *can* self-host but there are lots of existing servers you can join
"RSS Aggregator" plugin for Chrome. Very like the old Opera RSS reader.
