You cheap bastards Gigabyte, new motherboard I bought for my wife’s work PC doesn’t have a manual in the box, just a shite quick install guide that tells you nothing useful. 😡

Printing off select pages from the online manual because I’m old skool. It’s just so much easier to find connectors on a diagram, because they squeeze acronyms with teeny tiny writing on a black board that sucks all light out of the case and my eyes can’t cope with that. Also they totally don’t tell you in the quick start which are the preferred memory slots which isn’t always a given

The Seven Voyages Of Steve

Found a tiny blob of thermal paste on the surface of the motherboard, wondering if this supposedly new motherboard with a missing manual is actually used. No other wings of wear though so perhaps it was just from a QA test

I’d like to kick the person who invented PCIE card latches square in the family jewels. Incredibly dumb design - “I know, I’ll put the thing you need to press to remove a card directly underneath it! I’m a genius! GPUs won’t get constantly bigger to make this harder every time!” 😤

New board luckily has a lever extension but this is such a hack for a stupid POS design.

This rant brought to you by cutting my fingers to shreds trying to get a spudger down there to press a stick latch. Ended up popping the latch off entirely in the end, screw that junk

Well, at least after all my sailor-level swearing today the new board / CPU / RAM / NVMe drive all seem to work fine. We’re both AM5 in the office now.

Now I’m just holding my nose and installing Windows 11, and seeing how far I can get down Marie’s giant list of things she needs reinstalling

It’s a good job Windows isn’t voice activated by default otherwise it would probably be calling HR by now about me verbally abusing it.

Setting Windows up is mostly yelling “No! Piss off!” at the screen IME

@sinbad This issue goes right back to AGP cards - I dunno why they do it, the card is secured with screws to the back plate of the PC case anyway.

@KeefJudge I guess they’re trying to prevent angled seating problems but this is the dumbest solution imaginable in 2024. Sure it worked with your Riva 128 when it was just a board with one little teeny fan on it but it makes zero sense now

@sinbad The worst I've seen is a latch you have to PULL rather than push in a board a few years back. What were they thinking!?

@KeefJudge @sinbad Oh, you want a new graphics card? Welp, time to buy a new motherboard too, because this one isn't coming out!

@sinbad "why am i bleeding?" me after assembling my last PC

@lritter @sinbad Managed to deep cut my fingertip decades ago while assembling one. Scar is still visible. Since that day, one can easily identify my fingerprints w/o any training or special equipment.

@sinbad I did this accidentally. I had an oh shit I broke something moment followed by never mind I made it better. See also those flame arrestors on gas cans.

@sinbad A while back I was navigating in the car for Mrs Fieldhaven, and things were Not Working Properly for various reasons. As part of trying to get the tablet I was using for the maps doing what I needed, I accidentally activated the voice assistant on it. When I said "Oh, piss off!" at it, it actually replied with "That isn't very nice!" 🤣

@JeremiahFieldhaven @sinbad our best one ever was a few years back on our way back home from a friends. Kate was driving and replying to messages via Android's voice commands, and at one point she spoke out "We would have been back sooner, but Ric made us stop for coffee". Android stopped listening half way in and heard "We would have been back sooner, but Ric murders" 😂

@JeremiahFieldhaven @sinbad a close second was when she asked it to play one of her playlists, but it opened Google Music and started playing a similarly named public list, so she shouted "No not that, I want that other ****ing player that I can't remember the ****ing name of!" and it, impressively, replied "ok, playing your [whatever] play list in Spotify" 😆

@sinbad wow. That was indeed quite ranty 😁

@sinbad I heard you can avoid the official shovelware in a “clean” install by setting your region to English (World). The OOBE installer will fail and then you can correct your region after first login. Haven’t had a chance to try this yet.
