May Likes Toronto<p>It's always a good day to remind everyone that Bitmoji millionaire Jesse Brown funds Canadaland, the now right wing hate rag, through the proceeds from the sale of Bitmoji to Snapchat.</p><p>This sale also killed Bitstrips, a tool that a lot of teachers used to give students different methods of expression. </p><p>What reason could I have for bringing up Bitmoji millionaire Jesse Brown, you might ask? </p><p>They did a hit piece on respected Canadian journalist Rachel Gilmore, but badly. Daniel Carkner🥀<p>I'm sad to see (hear) the end of Canadaland's Détours. Emilie Nicolas is one of my favourite Canadian political commentators and I hope to be able to listen to her in some other format in the future. (Aside from her appearances as a panelist on CBC Power &amp; Politics which I enjoy; she's a nice antidote to the cynical Ottawa insiders.) Another of the "only reasons to still subscribe to Canadaland" falls away🤔 <br><a href="https://www.canadaland.com/podcast/54-recap-2024/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">canadaland.com/podcast/54-reca</span><span class="invisible">p-2024/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://historians.social/tags/Canadaland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canadaland</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/CdnPoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CdnPoli</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/CanadianPodcasts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanadianPodcasts</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/CanPoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanPoli</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/CanadianMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanadianMedia</span></a></p>

There was a serial about the anti-Indigenous racism in Thunder Bay — which won awards if I remember correctly. </p><p>But then, Jesse decided to throw it all away, and this is apparently where he's landed.</p><p>It used to be that they did media criticism. I cannot imagine that this episode involves anything but softballs because she is the thinnest-skinned being on the face of the Earth, and there is no way in hell criticism was on the table if she was going to show up.</p><p>He even had to remove links to less than flattering content about her in favour of puff pieces.<br>She wouldn't share it until he did. 😄</p><p>That's how fucking thin her skin is!</p><p>No longer included, but a really good round up of her EARLY harassing behaviour in the wake of the Chris Sky shitshow.<br><a href="https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1491181969555980290.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">threadreaderapp.com/thread/149</span><span class="invisible">1181969555980290.html</span></a></p>

I have a lot of (dwindling...?) respect for Jesse Brown and echo his concerns about rising antisemitism, however I understand the basic fact that "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" in no way procludes the simultaneous freedom of Jewish people in the same territory. </p><p>Dismissing the whole Pro-Palestinian movement because there are real instances of antisemitism at decentralised protests gets us no closer to peace because the systems of racism will be reflected in individuals in movements until racism is extinguished. The movement itself, its concerns and demands are not antisemitic. The racism is real though and must be dealt with, as too must we deal with the genocide and the occupation. </p><p>In this sorry excuse of an interview, Jesse doesnt even refer to the occuparion as such. Jesse also fails to push back when the Ambassador is flippant and dismissive about Isreal being labaled "colonialist," but Isreal is committing textbook settler colonialism (which surely Jesse knows) and that is the root of the problem. </p><p><a href="https://niagara.social/tags/CanadaPoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanadaPoli</span></a> <a href="https://niagara.social/tags/JesseBrown" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JesseBrown</span></a> <a href="https://niagara.social/tags/Canadaland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canadaland</span></a> <a href="https://niagara.social/tags/Journalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Journalism</span></a> <a href="https://niagara.social/tags/Politics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Politics</span></a> <a href="https://niagara.social/tags/Gaza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gaza</span></a> <a href="https://niagara.social/tags/Genocide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Genocide</span></a> <a href="https://niagara.social/tags/FromTheRiverToTheSea" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FromTheRiverToTheSea</span></a> <a href="https://niagara.social/tags/Palestine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Palestine</span></a></p>

Gersande La Flèche<p>&gt; Canadaland portrays itself as an alternative voice in the Canadian media landscape, and on many issues and topics, this is the case. I have found great benefit in some of the work Canadaland has done, and consider it to be a definite net positive for readers and listeners in this country. However, Canadaland’s record on foreign policy issues (such as conflicts abroad and how they’re covered domestically) isn’t much different than what is pumped out in mainstream outlets. This applies to its Palestine coverage in particular as well.</p><p>Source: <a href="https://www.readthemaple.com/canadaland-staff-promised-to-win-back-my-trust-theyve-failed/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">readthemaple.com/canadaland-st</span><span class="invisible">aff-promised-to-win-back-my-trust-theyve-failed/</span></a> <a href="https://silvan.cloud/tags/Canadaland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canadaland</span></a> <a href="https://silvan.cloud/tags/Palestine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Palestine</span></a></p>
