"Historically, surrealist stop motion animation engages its audience in exploring concepts dealing with perception and reality using a bizarre, dream-like aesthetic by manipulating physical objects one frame at a time."

I worked with Amber on #ColossalCave in VR and this is... very far out of my area of expertise but very very cool. #gamedev #animation #3D

Amber Johnson - MADblog · First PostThe purpose of this blog is to document my progress on my thesis project that I am completing for my Masters of Art & Design. It is going to be sort of a conglomeration of my notes and thoughts…

Vuonna 1977 julkaistu Colossal Cave Adventure on ketterästi yksi historian tärkeimmistä peleistä. Colossal Cave on oikeastaan kaikkien seikkailupelien isä, äiti ja syntylähde. Modernimman version tekeminen muinaisesta tekstipohjaisesta seikkailusta onkin melkoinen kunnianosoitus.

An adventure game discussion not too long ago reminded me that this remake of exists, so I gave the demo a try.

Not much demo in that 2.6 GB download, to be honest, but enough to get a feel for the controls, which were functional enough. You look through a well house for items, unlock a grate at the end of a stream, climb down, and then the game ends as you try to proceed further.

Next game I'm playing is Colossal Cave Adventure, the new graphical remake. But first... I am playing the original.

It was NOT EASY getting this compiled and working, but I got it compiled and working.

I have to make a map.

And now onto this video, where computer science lecturers briefly recall their first computer game experiences. My first computer games were played in December 1980 on a borrowed to home Apple II. I can’t remember if I played Colossal Cave first or Lemonade Stand, but those were my first two. The YouTube video’s comments are full of more reminiscences. youtu.be/GdzZFV8jfjg #ComputerGames #RetroComputing #InteractiveFiction #ColossalCave #AppleII #VintageComputing #LemonadeStand

This is a great diagram. It says "growth in length of Mammoth Cave", but that really means the growth of the *surveyed region* of the cave. The diameter of each branch shows the total surveyed passage length at that point in time.

Branches merge where a connection was made, thus merging two (surveyed) cave systems into one. The orange-blue merge is the famous expedition of 1972.

From the Cave Research Foundation newsletter, Feb 2023.

Now, what I'm really looking for is *high-resolution* scans of the old Colossal Cave maps described in this paper:

The 1845 Stephen Bishop map is here: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil

(I realize that modern maps are super-high-density and may not be available for download! But the historic ones must be somewhere.)

Has some excellent underground footage.

The full history of the Mammoth / Colossal / Crystal / Flint Ridge cave system hookup is told in _The Longest Cave_ (Brucker and Watson).
