Cob is a natural building material made from subsoil, water, organic fibrous material such as straw, and sometimes lime. A masonry plinth is normally built first to raise the cob off the ground. Ideally, the earth for the cob is dug on site or nearby.

Cob building is currently practiced predominantly in Devon, as well as in Cornwall. These examples are in the south-eastern part of Devon, where the New Red Sandstone gives rise to rich red soils.

Buckland Abbey Great Hall, Devon

Sir Richard Grenville transformed the Abbey to a private residence after it was dissolved in 1541. Original terracotta and white tiles, probably imported from Holland, laid in Great Hall built under what was once the church tower. Now owned by the National Trust.

River Tamar at Danescombe Valley

The Tamar defines the boundary between Devon and Cornwall for most of its length. At Danescombe, upstream from Cotehele Quay and downstream from Calstock on the Cornish side, there's what was the Ashburton Hotel (now Danescombe House) and a small boatyard and quay below. The valley itself is wooded on the north side, though once a hive of mining industry, with market gardening on the south.
