Good day!

Yesterday’s forecast: possible drizzle.

Reality? Drizzle to rain to snowstorm to sunny.

All while I hiked 11.8 miles (19.0 M) from my home, most of it outside the city. It was glorious.

This morning I’ll take my morning walk, draft a blog post, & edit a chapter.

This is the point where the paved Milwaukee Trail leaves the city and heads for Hellgate Canyon. It’s so wide because it used to be a railroad. To the left, a paved path passes over a pedestrian bridge. On the right, a paved path enters the university. Straight ahead, pavement transitions to dirt and gravel, passing between a field on the right and forest on the left. There are puddles owing to steady rain. In the distance is the entrance to Hellgate Canyon, the clouds mostly obscuring the forested peaks.

Dang, Little Whittle missed me! Two weeks away and I spot it in the creek on the morning ramble. It sees us and swims right up. My fav beaver. They were active today, others munching on fresh reed grass. #Hiking #Beavers #GetOutside.

Right after sunrise on this chilly day, I’ll depart on a hike down Hellgate Canyon. If possible, it’ll be a long hike. I could see some drizzle.

Coldest morning in a while. Another day, another walk, another chapter to edit.

While the weather transforms, I’m transforming me, transforming the book. When I reach the point when I’m no longer doing, I’m done.

A nice 3 1/2 mile hike on Janes Creek before lunch!

Have to share this. It’s maximum zoom with my cheap phone. I finally caught a squirrel partaking of my morning offering on the Milwaukee Trail.

My April journal is setup. Another chapter is edited.

I’ll walk (winterish weather has returned), purchase Evie food, & edit.

I found it, the line between winter & spring.

For me, after so many days writing around other tasks, I have a day of peace for writing, though adversity has made me insanely productive.

My last hike was my longest in months, my legs eager to tackle more next week. Bring it on.

I mentioned a couple of days ago that we had a #weather forecast for #rain + #snow possibly quite a bit. It stayed rain longer than forecast, finally going white (for a short time) late his morning; stopped for now, but still a possibility of 10-20cm through tomorrow night. We see part of the bottom of a balsam poplar tree trunk in upper left, leaning away out of frame. It is medium/dark grey, deeply furrowed vertically and covered in a thin layer of green moss and lichens in silver-green. The base of one large root shows at the left of the trunk and extends toward the lower left of the image, dividing the frame nearly in half, diagonally. The ground is covered with grey to red-brown fallen leaves from last year with a few small clumps of dried grass and fallen dark twigs here and there. Everything is wet dark. We don't see the root itself after the first foot or so away from the trunk, but we can tell where it is just below the surface, since the shallow or lacking soil on top of it has meant nothing is growing there except moss.The moss is bright to reddish green, with a generous sprinkling of dry red spruce needles. It rises just above the leaf litter in irregular clumps and blobs, sometimes touching, some with gaps, higher near the trunk, lower farther away as the root decreases in size/height.

Good day!

I took the Milwaukee Trail to explore the wild areas along the river across from downtown.

Nostalgia on my part? No, sorrow.

While our skyline grows, these areas decay. There’s neglect, restrictive fencing popping up, & expanding homeless encampments.

All thanks to our gov’t-slashing Republican governor.

5.1 sad miles.

Around it are open spaces, the grass still brown, the sculpture in silhouette, the sun behind one leg. In the distance are mountains, also largely in silhouette. The sky is mostly clear, thin clouds spreading from behind the mountains.

Overcast day, subtle light. Fuzzy silvery grey catkins beginning to emerge brush-like from their sticky red brown bud casings. Similar to pussywillows but with longer hairs (and they will stretch out *much* more as they emerge fully). Several catkins cluster at the tip of an upright twig, a couple more blurred in the background. Farther back light coloured aspen trunks form a blurred vertical abstract pattern with the shadowed areas between.

No free shuttle for me! On days like today when my car is getting worked on, I turn it into a #cycling adventure. After driving to the mechanic with my bike on the back of the car, I cycle home taking a very scenic route. Then return by bike to pick up my car. Do this year ‘round, rain or shine (and it is shining bright today! ). #ocean #beach #nature

On my walk yesterday in the rain, I solved a problem in a key chapter & came up with a handful of blogging ideas.

I’ll draft one of those today.

The edit is 64% done. This was drafted 8-years ago with some light editing since. It’s kinda rough. But not when I’m done.

From January. Grass and brush poke out from beneath the snow. The view looks through bare trees, a wide gap at center. In the distance are snow covered mountains, snow covered grass facing south, forest facing north. The sky is clear, except over the mountains.

Hiking Ancient Lakes part 8. This giant boulder seems eerily prescient, like something out of a fantasy novel. Perhaps someone (or some thing) threw it off the cliff at the last people who passed this way.

Gray-green sage brush plants. In the middle distance is a huge rock outcropping, jagged and mean looking, almost shaped like a cylinder perched on a 35 degree angle.

Another view of the strange rock, which is about 5 meters across, and the cliff beyond, which is a few hundred meters away and about fifty meters high.

A closer view of the jagged boulder which looks slightly metallic, like a meteorite or something, perched at an improbable angle on the ground. It looks as if it could fall over any time.

Hiking Ancient Lakes part 7. You can't go wrong with waterfalls and columnar basalt. Orange lichen on rabbit brush. Also does anyone recognize these giant reeds? Is this invasive pampas grass or something native? I don't know many of the plants here at all. 7/8

Hiking Ancient Lakes part 5. Here's some closeups of the main rock attraction here: columnar basalt, a result of ancient lava flows (way more ancient than the lakes). I keep wondering where all this lava came from-- the nearest existant volcano is probably Mt Rainier, over 130km away. 5/8

A rock formation, part of a cliff. The rocks seem to be divided into vertical hexagonal pillars all packed closely together a bit like organ pipes. These are quite weathered and have lots of horizontal chips or cracks in them.

Another columnar basalt cliff. The lower part is a debris pile, the middle part is a
Series of hexagonal pillars all packed together, and then more chaotic, weathered rock layers above that.

Another dramatic cliff similar to the others but even more extensive. The commons march along for 800 meters or more from left to right. Tall yellow grass in the foreground, and shredded up rain clouds overhead show blue between them.

Hiking Ancient Lakes part 4. This is a state park. Strangely, the trails aren't very well marked and in order to see all the good parts you have to drive round the outside to a couple different trailheads. But on a weekday in March, it's blissfully quiet and empty. I saw only maybe 6 people all day. 4/8 #PNW #Washington #hiking #geology #iceage #getoutside #outdoors
