Ben Harris
A nice thing about owning an old Land Rover is that in the spring in comes into bloom.

#PEH578L #Mosstodon

Ben Harris
A few years ago, I think I got #PEH578L to do 70 mph down the M11. I tried again this evening to see if my recent fiddlings have significantly reduced its power and my GPS receiver says I hit 68.3 mph. But there were lorries and a lane closure, so maybe without those it would have been better.

This experiment does seem to have resulted in a new rattle, so maybe I shouldn't be in too much of a hurry to repeat it.

Ben Harris
I took #PEH578L out to the local petrol station this evening. I can report:

+ It starts and runs quite happily in freezing temperatures.
+ The lights work.
+ So does the heating, including the valve that turns it off.
+ PEH 578L re-started after being stopped for a while, twice, which it sometimes didn't.
+ Its tyres are all properly pumped up now.
− Girton Service Station doesn't have E5 petrol.
+ But the Esso station on Histon Road does.
− And I'm still rather bad at reversing into the drive.

Ben Harris
Finally got around to looking at #PEH578L's petrol gauge. Multimeter showed that the fault was at the sender, which is a simple float on an arm operating a variable resistor.

Opened it up and was slightly surprised to discover a wire-wound rheostat. Also that three of the turns are broken which would explain why it doesn't work. So unless I feel like re-winding it, I probably need a new one.

Ben Harris
The other #PEH578L job I had planned for today's daylight was cleaning up some of the driver's footwell for painting. But having cleaned it up a bit I think the footwell may be too rotten for painting to do it much good. It really needs quite a lot of repairs first. And that needs me to be able to take it to someone who can weld.

Ben Harris
@chiffchaff That's an interesting question, and I don't think it has a simple answer. Rather there are lots of components that contribute to my confidence.

One part is documentation. After I bought #PEH578L I immediately bought the official repair manual and parts catalogue. The manual gives me confidence that if I follow it I at least won't miss out some critical but non-obvious step. And the parts catalogue is great for seeing how things are meant to fit together. 1/5

Ben Harris
A bit of putting things together for #PEH578L's brake pedal while it was raining. The new brake light switch is attached to its bracket, the stop bolt is attached to the pedal with the proper nut, and the pivot is filled with oil.
