This despite my having used multiple instances & software variants over that time [so it seems implausible that by misfortune i've accidentally picked instances each time that have all been fediblocked by other transwomen]. Ergo it seems that the cause might be that for reasons i don't understand lots of other transwomen decided a couple of years ago that i totes suck & so they all individually blocked me... or that my trans toots are so utterly banal & boring as to be unworthy of interest or discussion. </p><p>Even vanilla peeps don't engage, on this topic. Obvs they do not have their own personal lived experience to share & compare, but statistically many of them will have a family member, or friend, or work/social colleague, who is trans... or at the very least will have formed some slight opinions even just from the fact that trans has sadly become so toxically politicised in the past decade. But nope, it's always just 🦗🦗🦗</p><p>I'm struck by a certain irony here, given that afaik the early origins of the fediverse creation & development was by & for queer peeps to have a safe & pleasant place to be themselves, away from cesspit media. </p><p>Clearly there's simply no point me bothering with further toots on any trans matters. In Ep 4 of that series, <a href="https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=WoRlN1hQZP0&feature=shared" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=WoRlN1h</span><span class="invisible">QZP0&feature=shared</span></a> <em>"But What If the People Are Stupid?"</em>, i was taken by surprise by what at first i mistook as yet another abrupt visual <em>non sequitur</em>, being various scenes featuring Julia Grant [<a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Grant_(transgender_activist)" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_</span><span class="invisible">Grant_(transgender_activist)</span></a>]. </p><p>It was impossible for me to watch those painful scenes without simultaneously thinking of two other things; my own transition, & the recent / current UK legal imbroglio about transwomen. </p><p>Each & every time i learn of horrible political &/or physical attacks on trans peeps generally but transwomen specifically, thru my upset i ask one repeating question; why are we so hated & despised for firstly having been born with the curse of gender dysphoria, then secondly for trying to find ourselves & ameliorate the pain? </p><p>Though i regard my hitherto GD as an unambiguous curse, i was comparatively fortunate to be able to eventually fully transition, albeit sadly several decades too late [with all the adverse implications]. To do so i had to navigate medical gatekeeping, as was <em>de rigueur</em> under the <em>Harry Benjamin Standards of Care (HBSOC)</em> that "ruled the roost" back in my day 20 years ago in Australia, Thailand, USA & [i assume] UK. Anyway, the shock of seeing the unexpected scenes mentioned above made me think of the present UK mess, & the extent to which historically many poor desperate transwomen were blocked from being able to properly transition [to whatever extent they desired] by overbearing medical gatekeeping... especially when applied so despicably per the following. Then, roll forward to now, they find themselves thrice assaulted... once at birth, twice at thwarted transition, thrice by legal exclusion. It's just such agony.</p><p>So, in Ep 4, two scenes illustrating awful bigoted, sexist, if not maybe also misogynistic & even outright transmisic, gatekeeping by a NHS psychiatrist. He is arrogant, scornful, argumentative, & utterly dismissive of her faltering attempts to explain her inner world to him. </p><ul><li> 7:17 - 9:17</li><li> 23:43 - 25:17</li></ul><p>I'm not a Pom & have never been to Pommyland, so had never experienced that painful mistreatment there. Also, this is several decades old, so i don't know if the contemporary scenario is better or even worse. </p><p>However i did personally experience a milder version of it myself, right near the end of my pre-transition "exploring" phase in 2003, when i had decided that i'd finally come to understand myself after all the confused distressing decades, & was required to consult a psych to proceed. The first one suggested to me was preposterously unsuitable. He did not take me seriously, seemed more inclined to tell me about his d0g than actually consult me, but then at the end of that one & only session declared his belief that i was <em>"prolly just a gay guy"</em>. Ugh; idiot. Had i no other psych options than him, i'd never have been able to proceed with the surgical parts of my transition, as the Strayan, Merkan & Thai surgeons all required patients present a psych commendation [per HBSOC]. </p><p>Ergo, i really felt deeply for the sadly departed Julia's dilemma, & feel deeply for what my UK sisters are now being forced to endure. As a post-op transwoman i suppose i'd be in the targeted group now, were i in Pommieland not Straya. Thing is though, whilst [yet] this latest legal imbroglio does not officially pertain here, my belief is that in no time flat it will have been picked up & actively weaponised here by all the hateful transphobes & transmisics, just as the last several years of Merkan anti-trans toxicity has already been imported here. The general tone of decency & empathy in this thread is encouraging, & i'm grateful for it. However, given i chose to give up in & since 2010 on being physically in the world, due to my depression & social phobia at what i perceive as my failed 2004-2006 transition [not Passing] even when the political temperature here was comparatively lower, decisions like this UK one, & the ongoing horrors of Merka, Hungary etc, make the chances of my ever returning to the world even more remote. Threads like this help me to know that not everyone is an enemy, but the trouble is that in the real world i cannot discern good peeps from bad until & unless the bad peeps do their thing. I am so lacking in all confidence that it's a risk i am simply unable to endure. I think it's great that for years now so many trans peeps have been confident enough to go on & just live their lives, but i wonder to what extent there's others like me who have such abundant timidity if not cowardice that the rancid transphobia & transmisia has caused us to self-censor ourselves out of public existence. It said that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which is the NIH’s parent agency, “has been directed to fund research on a few specific areas” related to what it calls “chemical and surgical mutilation” of children and adults — a reference to gender-affirming care and surgery. “This is very important to the President and the Secretary” of the HHS, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, the e-mail added.</p><p>Based on its priorities, the White House sometimes directs the NIH — the world’s largest public funder of biomedical science — to study certain broad topics, such as cancer or women’s health, but the latest directive’s specificity, inflammatory language and focus on a hyper-polarizing topic are unprecedented, the NIH employees say. Although the White House can sometimes “push us on various different things, we normally get to chart out the approach”, a staff member says.</p><p>Many scientists, reeling from the abrupt cancellation of more than US$180 million in NIH funding for research on transgender health, slammed the proposed studies as ideologically driven.</p><p>“It’s really pigeonholing trans people into this medical lens where the only thing important to know about them is that they seek medical transition” and regret it, says Harry Barbee, who studies the health of people from gender and sexual minorities (LGBT+) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, and identifies as non-binary and queer. “When ideology is prioritized over scientific merit, that threatens the entire scientific enterprise.”</p><p>The NIH and the White House did not respond to Nature’s queries about the new research priorities or scientists’ concerns with their apparent ideological bent. The HHS said that the “NIH is prioritizing research that serves the best interests of public health, not ideological agendas, and will continue to support studies that provide clear, objective data — particularly regarding the long-term effects of gender transitions.”</p><p>Estimates suggest that 1.6 million people in the United States identify as transgender, and about one-quarter of them obtain gender-affirming surgeries. Research suggests1 that access to these procedures can reduce anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation in transgender people.</p><p>US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office on 20 January that directed the US government to stop acknowledging that gender can differ from sex at birth. The cancellation of many trans-health research grants quickly followed, and now the agency seems to be shifting the type of research it funds. The e-mail from Memoli, obtained by Nature, specifies two areas of research that the Trump administration wishes to fund about “social transition”, which is when a person changes how they express their gender to others — for example, by changing their name or appearance.</p><p>These include “regret and detransition following social transition as well as chemical and surgical mutilation of children and adults” and “outcomes from children who have undergone social transition and/or chemical and surgical mutilation”, the e-mail says.</p><p>More research on the experience of trans people — including understanding reasons for dissatisfaction after transition — is direly needed, Barbee says. But they worry that the sole focus on negative consequences is misplaced: fewer than 1% of transgender people who undergo gender-affirming surgery regret it, according to an analysis published by Barbee and their colleagues2. By comparison, 14.4% of the broader population reports regret after any kind of surgery3.</p><p>So far, about 187 NIH grants funding trans-health research have been terminated, according to an online effort to track the Trump team’s research cuts by Brittany Charlton, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, who studies LGBT+ health, and her colleagues. I now no longer believe it is a fear-based response, but is predominantly based on <em>hatred</em>. I did not know what it meant, but when i researched it, & discovered its etymology is to reflect the more contemporary manifestation of <em>hate</em> not mere <em>fear</em>, it roundly resonated with me. As such, in all contexts now where i previously spoke of <em>transphobia</em>, i now instead use <em>transmisia</em>, as it seems a better fit for today's dire reality for trans peeps. If limited to commentators who knew what the word actually meant, I’d be lucky to have 35¢.</p><p>Woke wasn’t always a pejorative, of course.</p><p>Before George Floyd’s horrific murder, it had long been in use among the African-American community – “stay woke” meant, essentially, “stay alert to systemic injustice”. The kind of systemic injustice, for example, that might lead to you gasping for air with a police officer’s knee to your throat.</p><p>Following Floyd’s death, it gained global ascendancy through the Black Lives Matter movement.</p><p>Since then, the meaning has shifted. Some in the cultural and political right seized on the word – much as they did “political correctness” – to use it as a catch-all for any policy or movement that did not align with their worldview.</p><p>As a branding exercise, it was genius. Any time “woke” passes through sneering lips at a media conference, or appears in the op-ed pages, you know it’s some conservative – or regressive – voice intent on maintaining their privileged status in society.</p><p>Political leaders such as Donald Trump and Peter Dutton call out woke like Joseph McCarthy once called out communists – it’s a vibe thing.</p><p>And not a day goes by without frothing social media comments in response to even the most innocuous posts – “so sick of this woke crap!” etc etc.</p><p>I imagine you’ll see it in response to this piece, too.</p><p>But what, exactly, is woke these days? It seems to be any policy, activity or movement with even a hint of empathy at its core.</p><p>Welcome to Country ceremonies, which can have the added benefit of reminding people of our nation’s (ahem) complicated history, have been described as “divisive and woke ceremonial practices with no meaning”.</p><p>An acknowledgement of First Nations people prior to an event? That’s woke. A rainbow flag outside a business? That’s woke. Giving the disadvantaged a leg up? That’s woke.</p><p>Not adequately celebrating Australia Day? That’s woke. Recognising that particular national holiday may not be a cause for celebration for all Australians? Woke.</p><p>Diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) programs? Woke.</p><p>To a degree, I get it. Change is hard. I’ve been known to struggle with the “they/them” pronouns – not through any issue with trans people, but rather with the words’ plural nature (just how many of them are there?).</p><p>But if adjusting my language can make life a little easier for someone already having to navigate so much, I’m happy to oblige (even if I wish they – in the traditional plural sense of “they” – adopted a new word).</p><p>Of late, though, the right’s mask has been coming off.</p><p>Never was that more obvious than when an eminently qualified black, lesbian fire chief in Los Angeles came under attack as a “DEI hire”. Even Kamala Harris was ludicrously described as the “DEI vice president”.</p><p>Woke has become the right’s word du jour, in part because, even in the age of Donald Trump, the N-word is still frowned upon.</p><p>I’ve never really considered myself woke – in fact, I find usage of the word a little stupid. But if its accepted new definition is embracing, seeking and fighting for empathy and fairness – across race, gender, sexuality and culture – count me in.</p><p>At a time when the most vulnerable are increasingly targeted, a little empathy and understanding has never been more important.</p><p>And if you’re offended by that, you’re not “anti-woke”, you’re just a jerk.</p><ul><li>Cameron Atfield is Droppie [infosec] 🐨:archlinux: :kde: :firefox_nightly: :thunderbird: :vegan:<p><a href="https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/8888817/sovereign-citizens-hire-event-space-at-old-parliament-house" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">canberratimes.com.au/story/888</span><span class="invisible">8817/sovereign-citizens-hire-event-space-at-old-parliament-house</span></a></p><p><u><strong>Quote</strong></u></p><p>Old Parliament House will review its event booking process after a group of "sovereign citizens" hired the venue's courtyard for an event at the weekend.</p><p>Police were called to monitor the gathering of about 100 people on Saturday, February 8, once staff realised the nature of the event.</p><p>A live stream of the gathering showed various speakers taking turns addressing the seated crowd, in what the organisers described on social media as a "grand jury indictment" of the Australian government.</p><p>Events like the one on Saturday have become few and far between since gatherings of "sovereign citizens" reached their peak in 2022.</p><p>But Old Parliament House staff said they were not aware of the nature of the event when it was booked.</p><p>A spokesperson said the event was booked under an acronym, GJI Event, and was organised through the third-party contractor that manages the event spaces at Old Parliament House.</p><p>It wasn't until the day of the event that staff realised the purpose of the gathering and immediately increased security arrangements.</p><p>This included calling the police to attend, the spokesperson confirmed.</p><p>The event took place peacefully and without incident, however it did not align with the role of Old Parliament House, the spokesperson said.</p><p>"Our role is to strengthen understanding of Australia's democratic system," they said.</p><p>"As a result, Old Parliament House will be reviewing event booking processes with a view to adding an extra layer of oversight."</p><p>The Canberra Times also asked whether there was a fee to hire the event space and requested further details on how event bookings are processed.</p><p>The spokesperson for Old Parliament House did not respond to the questions and said they were confidential matters between the third party and the client.</p><p>Restaurant Associates, the third-party contractor that manages events at Old Parliament House, was contacted for comment but declined.</p><p>It comes more than three years after a group, which included sovereign citizens and anti-vaccine campaigners, deliberately set fire to the doors of Old Parliament House.</p><p>The December 2021 fire resulted in more than $5 million worth of damage.</p><p>In 2022, thousands of people from a number of loosely affiliated groups, including sovereign citizens, converged on the ACT for a mass anti-vaccine protest.</p><p>Disparagingly referred to as "cookers", the group set up camps across the capital and were, at one point, considering buying private land after being evicted from Exhibition Park.</p><p>But by early 2023, Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation director-general Mike Burgess said the number of cases involving anti-vaccine mandates and COVID-19 conspiracies had significantly declined.</p><p><u><strong>Unquote</strong></u></p><p><a href="https://infosec.space/tags/RWNJs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RWNJs</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/sovereigncitizens" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sovereigncitizens</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/FuckRWNJs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FuckRWNJs</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/AusPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AusPol</span></a></p>

When i transitioned in the early Oughties, my decision for Thai surgeries was because of a severe lack of local surgeons at all, & the few available used obsolete techniques that i certainly eschewed.
