MylesRyden
One final post in my "Boomers are greedy" series.

So, if wages were stagnant for years, but the economy has clearly been growing pretty well (The Dow Jones Industrial Average has grown 100 fold since 1980) where did the money go?

The simple answer is that the Billionaire Class took it. Here is a chart that shows wages versus productivity since 1980. Increases in productivity happen in many ways, but mostly people working harder and smarter or being replaced by machines (or now "AI").

As you can see the value of work (productivity) has increased tremendously, but virtually none of that increase was shared as increased wages.

If you speak in terms of "generations," yes, "Boomers" instituted these policies. But clearly many more "Boomers" suffered as a result of these policies.

The problem is the Billionaire Class -- not one generation or another.

#Boomers #Economics #WageGrowth

MylesRyden
My problem with someone saying "Boomers" are greedy is that it is a false generalization. It's the same as any other stereotype, a grain of truth (in this particular case) blown completely out of proportion.

A small group of Boomers has done very well, as the chart below shows. The top line is the income of the Top 10% of earners versus the income of the Bottom 90%.

So, it is true that SOME Boomers are greedy, but the vast majority suffered from the policies that benefited the Top 10%. It was the Billionaire Class that "pulled up the ladder."

The issue is not between generations, but between classes.

#Boomers #Economics #WageGrowth

MylesRyden
I was recently involved in a discussion where someone (who frankly should know better) flatly stated that we Boomers were "selfish" and "pulled up the ladder behind us." Granted Boomers are like no other "generation" simply because of the size of the cohort, but statistically we did not do as well as the generation before us (not that I am holding them responsible in any way).

Here is a graph of real wages from 1980 to the present. Notice the drop as Reagan took office and the stagnation over the next 15 years (when late Boomers were entering the labor market).

Upward trend under Clinton and flat again under Bush (noticing a trend here?) Finally some real growth over the last few years, when many Boomers are retired or retiring.

Does this look "lucky" or "greedy' to you?

#Boomers #Economics #WageGrowth
