Time lapse photograph of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, Maincy, France, 2021

Built between 1658 and 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Marquis de Belle Île, Viscount of Melun and Vaux, the superintendent of finances of Louis XIV, the château was an influential work of architecture in mid-17th-century Europe. At Vaux-le-Vicomte, the architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André Le Nôtre and the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun worked together on a large-scale project for the first time. Their collaboration marked the beginning of the Louis XIV style combining architecture, interior design and landscape design. The garden's pronounced visual axis is an example of this style.

When visitng the chateau last weekend it was turned into an enchanting and fairytale-like castle with thousands of sparkly and colorful lights. It is christmas festivities like these that add an excessive garishness or sentimentality to an already lavish but perfectly balanced piece of baroque architecture. This extra layer of extravagance enables one to get some idea of what it must have been like for people back in the day to lay eyes upon the chateau for the very first time during the festivities of its grand opening in 1661.

As so often is the case with my work, this photograph wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the inspiring music of Jean Michel Jarre, - especially his 45 minute track “Waiting for Cousteau” - and Nils Frahm - in particular his brilliant live performance of “Says”.

📍 Stockholm Nights: A Gothic Winter Tale

In the heart of Södermalm, one of Stockholm’s most vibrant and historic districts, stands Katarina Church (Katarina kyrka), a Baroque masterpiece with a story as dramatic as its architecture. Originally built in the late 1600s, the church has endured two devastating fires, in 1723 and 1990, only to rise from the ashes each time—earning its place as a symbol of resilience in the city’s history.

Surrounding the church is its peaceful cemetery, where gravestones and iron-wrought fences echo centuries of lives lived in this iconic part of Stockholm. Among those buried here are prominent Swedes, including Anna Lindh, a former foreign minister, and Cornelis Vreeswijk, a beloved troubadour and poet. Walking through the cemetery feels like stepping into another time, with each snow-covered stone telling its own story under the quiet watch of the church’s spire.

The location adds to its charm—perched on Södermalm, an island known for its mix of bohemian culture and historic charm, Katarina Church is a beacon visible from much of the city. Capturing this scene under the falling snow at night felt like freezing a moment of Stockholm’s timeless beauty, where history, architecture, and winter intertwine in haunting elegance.

The #baroque church of San Bernardo in #rome is built into a circular hall of the #ancient #roman baths of Diocletian, although little of the original masonary can be seen (some of the brick at the back) the church preserve the original, ancient shape and even the stunning octagonal coffering of the dome. #ancientrome #romanempire #ancientarchitecture #architecturalhistory #archaeology #romanhistory #baroquearchitecture
