What you do instead is to make the document visible to everybody with the link, and then *treat the link as the password*.The links to Google Docs are already of a form that cannot be guessed. So this is equivalent to putting the document up on an easy-to-guess URL and then distribute a hard-to-guess password via some other channel.

I am having this issue where I can apply a password in Microsoft Office locally on my PC, but when I upload the file, the document is read only, with the password working.If I create a Google word doc, I don't see anywhere that gives me the option of assigning a password... Tying my Google account to a third party makes me nervous.
