Emory<p>this post on reddit of a hidden secret <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homelab</span></a> is something i've saved for later because Tracey is not the sort of woman that finds my mad scientist workstation and rolling half-racks. this person hid it behind books which even my ex-wife would be hard pressed to complain about, although she tolerated my shenanigans better than some 😂 </p><p><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/1jl14o6/secret_homelab/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/</span><span class="invisible">1jl14o6/secret_homelab/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/networking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>networking</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/homenet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homenet</span></a></p>
Emory<p>it's a good thing i consider it a badge of honor to serial console a network switch, because i'm consoling a switch again. </p><p>also i don't want to impact airflow but my 10/40GbE switch is a bit, lets say, vocal, and my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> cabinet is about 15' from my desk on the other side of my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdAV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdAV</span></a> and i will not be spending thousands of dollars to roll it all into the utility room or anything, not at this house.</p>
Emory<p>apparently the garage door situation is remedied by buying the meross thing and filling out a form so they mail me an accessory because i have a yellow "learn" button on my garage door opener. <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/homekit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homekit</span></a></p>
Emory<p>oh no! </p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@bob_zim" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bob_zim</span></a></span> well shit i've been working off old advice or bad advice because i have been allocating only 256-512GB l2arc and zil on drives that are larger since 2012 😭 thank you for the bystander intervention! <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/zfs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zfs</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a></p>
Emory<p>so far my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/bazzite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bazzite</span></a> experience sucks.</p><p>haven't even gotten to <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/zfs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zfs</span></a> yet because games aren't playing correctly at all and steamplay or proton it doesn't matter so in the hopes i did something dumb with my disklabel or something i am making install media again and will try again. <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/gaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gaming</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a></p>
Emory<p>i got tired of hearing about how great linux gaming is outside of steamdeck so i got a 4TB NVME drive (Crucial is very affordable at that capacity and I can't use 2TB anymore) and i pulled my win11 disks that use bitlocker, and swapped out a SATA SSD i can cable up inside the enclosure and moved a lower cap one to a little ventilated 2.5mm SATA JBOD i use. \o/</p><p>so i am installing <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/bazzite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bazzite</span></a> with nvidia flavored KDE. if it works for my needs i'll start newfsing everything to <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/zfs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zfs</span></a><br><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a></p>
Emory<p>i have a 84505R Liftmaster garage door opener and they've fscked with the MyQ API so much that i can't use <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/HomeKit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeKit</span></a> via MyQ and need to go with a <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/RATGDO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RATGDO</span></a> device or similar, but because my opener is a 84505R and therefore has a "yellow learn button" (lol?) i am told i need An Adapter but not what Adapter that might be.</p><p>this is the hanging chad of my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> that persists and i am determined to figure it out without buying a new opener. and you can help! if you have any ideas lmk 🙏 <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/iot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iot</span></a> <br>guh</p>
Emory<p>oh wow this is fun, <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/Screens" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Screens</span></a> for <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/iPadOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iPadOS</span></a> (i also use it on <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/macOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macOS</span></a>) has that Screens Connect feature but they also added a <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/tailscale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tailscale</span></a> integration so you get a populated list of your assets in a tailnet. everything in here will be commandeered by your private encrypted backplane.</p><p>if you're new to my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a>, i use tailscale to bridge two house nets. when i'm out here in PHL, i can still access the filers/media and household <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> back in iowa city. sweet!</p><p>also to facilitate cute <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/automations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>automations</span></a>.</p>
Emory<p>howard's being brilliant again and there's a new release of a great <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/macOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macOS</span></a> tool for <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/logs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>logs</span></a> called <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/LogUI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LogUI</span></a>. </p><p>&gt; Although my log browser Ulbow gives much better access, for many it’s still a daunting task. I’ve now switched almost entirely to using my new lightweight log browser, LogUI, and here explain how you can use it. Although it’s currently an early release with limited features, you should find it ideal for getting started.</p><p>\o/<br><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/syslog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>syslog</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/infosec" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>infosec</span></a> <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2025/03/14/browse-your-macs-log-with-logui/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">eclecticlight.co/2025/03/14/br</span><span class="invisible">owse-your-macs-log-with-logui/</span></a></p>
Emory<p>whoa i didn't know these things had a cool lighting effect! the enclosure is pretty nice, hardware mute switch is a little fussy on the first one, haven't opened the other yet. but once i saw the lights spin i immeadiatly thought "i gotta get this on the wall"</p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/okayNabu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>okayNabu</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a></p>
Emory<p>oh wow my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> voxboxen arrived today! i wasn't expecting it that fast or i would have gone to get the mail sooner. it comes with a 'hello nabu' sticker and first order of business is to see if we'll be able to instead be using 'dagoo' as the wakeword, because my 12yo used to say that when they said "thank you" and it seems perfect for this use case.</p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a></p>
Emory<p>y0 i never considered picking out vintage skus on <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/10Gbps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>10Gbps</span></a> switches for the house! 🤦 thank you 🙇🏻 💞 eva 💞!</p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/networking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>networking</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@winterschon/113909262222767009" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mastodon.bsd.cafe/@winterschon</span><span class="invisible">/113909262222767009</span></a></p>
Emory<p>if you're into <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> and private automation you will probably like to hear that Cloudfree has the Home Assistant Voice – Preview Edition back in stock for USD<br>$59.00</p><p>i just got one because i have been impatiently waiting for them to be available again after they blew through them so fast last time! long-context conversations with a household <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> is my intended use case.</p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/voice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>voice</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/assistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>assistant</span></a> <a href="https://cloudfree.shop/product/home-assistant-voice-preview-edition/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">cloudfree.shop/product/home-as</span><span class="invisible">sistant-voice-preview-edition/</span></a></p>
Emory<p>come on y'all i'm pushing nearly 4 inches behind that mirror and nobody is batting an eye sheesh i'll wake you up when i get a short throw laser someday then. i may have posted too much "Finding The Best Inexpensive Projectors for <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a>" content lately!</p>
Emory<p>my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/ResilioSync" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ResilioSync</span></a> setup has been running for years but i'm starting to run into open file limits and a lot of scan thrashing. i'm making some adjustments to the <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/resilio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>resilio</span></a> parameters in the advanced options but i think i really need to further distribute the folders i'm sharing and syncing to reduce the depth and volume i think.</p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/seafile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>seafile</span></a> is really impressive but not as easily integrated into my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> at all, unfortunately. i'll try it when i built a new filer.</p>
Emory<p>why would you buy a <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/jbod" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jbod</span></a> for 4 mechanical and 4 nvme disks but kneecap it at 10Gbps just buy a NAS. i don't think anyone makes something like this for thunderbolt. i have owc's 4 nvme thunderbolt jbod and sabrent's thunderbolt 2x nvme enclosure, but 4 mechanical and this would be rad as hell if i could put 4x14 or 16TB disks two mirrored vdevs then redundant l2arc and zil riding shotgun. </p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/zfs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zfs</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/storage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>storage</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a></p><p><a href="https://a.co/d/8wr6ye6" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">a.co/d/8wr6ye6</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Emory<p>oh wow while on holiday my <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/unifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>unifi</span></a> dream machine now shows me active home hubs and <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/netflows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>netflows</span></a> apparently?! get a load of the flow view and laugh in <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/adblock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>adblock</span></a> (debut is a NAS with my resolver for the IOW house):</p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/networking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>networking</span></a> <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/flows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flows</span></a></p>
Emory<p>i don't suppose i know anyone that has tried out any of these <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/NAS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NAS</span></a> filers from <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/ugreen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ugreen</span></a>? i have been delighted with every power bank and wall wart i've bought from ugreen but now they're shipping direct and network attached storage units and they're in an interesting "not quite whole house media server but we give you HDMI and 2.5Gb ethernet" demographic.</p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/householdIT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>householdIT</span></a></p>
