folken<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://bitbang.social/@billgoats" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>billgoats</span></a></span> i have another one. In <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/soaring" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>soaring</span></a> (flying planes without engines) we long used <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> s for navigation (screen sunlight readable), attached to the windshields. One pilot came to me and told me that his IPAQ would stall when the course of the plane was between 270 and 300 degrees. Somewhat perplexed I went looking and found out that the IRDA port in IPAQs had a bug, that would cause 100% cpu if the sun shone into the IRDA port. Firmware update fixed that.</p>

in_sympathy<p>Found newer Windows Mobile 6.5.3 images for HP iPAQ 214 than what was installed on my device, so decided to give an update a try🤞🏻. Gosh, the ere are even some <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> images for it - maybe I’ll try that someday as well 🙌🏻</p><p>You’ll find them here if you’re interested:<br><a href="https://archive.org/details/iPAQ_210_ROMs" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">archive.org/details/iPAQ_210_R</span><span class="invisible">OMs</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputer</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/windowsmobile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>windowsmobile</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq214" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq214</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq210" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq210</span></a></p>
in_sympathy<p>But anyway now I have a good HP iPaq 214 that runs WM6 all 3 parts of Pocked EverQuest 🙌</p><p>Because strange fact - my older Compaq iPaqs can run PocketEQ 3, but not 1 and 2 weird 🤯. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pockedpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pockedpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/windowsmobile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>windowsmobile</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/everquest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>everquest</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketeverquest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketeverquest</span></a></p>
in_sympathy<p>And also I managed to replace a worn out supercapacitor on my latest HP iPaq 214. </p><p>On my first attempt I totally failed the job because time keeping when the battery removed did not appear and also I disturbed a few neighboring components. </p><p>So on a second attempt I came with 300ºC hot air and solder paste and the cap exploded in my face 😂. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/electronic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>electronic</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/electronicsrepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>electronicsrepair</span></a></p>
🌪 MikeMathia.com 📡<p>Don’t mind me, I’m just copying Eminem's new music CD to my <a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/iPaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iPaq</span></a> 🤣</p>
in_sympathy<p>Franks, lire, marks - hello from the past <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputer</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retro</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/windowsmobile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>windowsmobile</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/compaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>compaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/computerhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computerhistory</span></a></p>
in_sympathy<p>So I had to open the device and connect it directly to the bench power supply set up at 5V 2A for like 5-10 minutes. After that I plugged it back into the device and it got immediately recognized 👍🏻. </p><p>Hope that helps many other retro gadget enthusiasts out there 🙌🏻</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a></p>
in_sympathy<p>But there are a few more important things:</p><p>1) if your new battery is 4mm - try to put a battery management system PCB next to the battery and not on top of it to make the whole construction as thin as possible</p><p>2) battery terminals are way to flimsy and easy to break, but can be soldered no problem with a good flux</p><p>3) probably the most important: at first my new battery didnt want to charge and was not really recognized by the device:</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a></p>
in_sympathy<p>So I just carefully desoldered an old battery from a BMS board and then soldered a new one instead. </p><p>And the device successfully booted with a new battery 🕺 </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a></p>
in_sympathy<p>Now it's time to set up a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/windowsxp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>windowsxp</span></a> virtual machine and install Microsoft Active Sync - synchronise it and make it realise it's 2024 😂. </p><p>P.S.: I'am also gonna install Everquest since it was my favorite game on this device. And which one was yours? </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a></p>
in_sympathy<p>A few more minor issues were discovered and fixed - one of the pins on a 3.5mm audio output got unsoldered over time - took me like 1 minute to make it good as new. Also stylus didn't want to stay inside because of the damaged holding mechanism - nothing a drop of hot glue can't keep in place ✅ </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/electronicsrepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>electronicsrepair</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ifixit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ifixit</span></a></p>
in_sympathy<p>Today I successfully revamped my 20+ years old Compaq iPaq H3835 - one of the first ever PDAs with a color display and Windows Mobile. I also had a foldable keyboard for this thing back in 2001-2003. I use to annoy people on the bus home from my lyceum by unfolding that keyboard and coding something using a Pocket Programming Language - a C based language someone made specifically for Windows CE and Windows Mobile. Those were the days :) <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pda" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pda</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocketpc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocketpc</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ipaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ifixit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ifixit</span></a></p>
derSammler<p>This early version gives some very nice insights into the game's development. First, I can bust a myth: The <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/Nokia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nokia</span></a> <strong>N-Gage</strong> version is not a port of the PlayStation game! Instead, it's a direct port of the <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/iPaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iPaq</span></a> version from 2001. Pretty much all of the iPaq code is still there (incl. FMV stuff), they just made what was needed to get it working on the N-Gage.</p><p>Even some (unused) assets are still there and the level file is taken unmodified from the iPaq version, too.</p><p>I really need to dig deeper into this. 🙂 </p><p><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/ngage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ngage</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/TombRaider" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TombRaider</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/mobile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mobile</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/prototype" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prototype</span></a></p>
