Paul H :tinoflag:<p>It feels good to see so much here on Mastodon and elsewhere as to what people are doing to celebrate Matariki. It's starting to feel like our first truly national day. (I know we have Waitangi Day but that, I think, has a different resonance.) Many pākehā like me need to embrace its uniqueness more, but I can feel something special beginning to emerge. There is an awful lot to be negative about Aotearoa at the moment, but Matariki isn't one of them - quite the opposite in fact.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/matariki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>matariki</span></a></p>

Journeys In Film<p>We're quickly coming up on Matariki, the Māori New Year which this year falls on June 28. It's a great time to teach about Māori culture with Whale Rider, the award-wining film about a Māori girl who challenges tradition to fulfill her destiny. Make it a film-book pairing with the book the film was based on, The Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera.</p><p>Our classroom-ready lesson plans for teaching with Whale Rider cover subjects across the curriculum, including a mathematics lesson on counting the uncountable, and a science lesson on whales and echolocation. </p><p>Learn more: <a href="https://journeysinfilm.org/product/whale-rider/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">journeysinfilm.org/product/wha</span><span class="invisible">le-rider/</span></a></p><p>Mānawatia a Matariki! </p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Matariki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Matariki</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Maori" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Maori</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/M%C4%81ori" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Māori</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Aotearoa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Aotearoa</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/NewZealand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewZealand</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/NZ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NZ</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Education</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/IndigenousPeoples" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IndigenousPeoples</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/GlobalEducation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GlobalEducation</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/HumanGeography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HumanGeography</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/SocialStudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialStudies</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/STEM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STEM</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/K12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>K12</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/edutooters" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>edutooters</span></a></span></p>
