We take a look at how British people feel about Brexit five years after the UK officially left the EU. We also discuss the challenges many Brits abroad now face, particularly those with second homes. Finally, we get to the bottom of the many reasons why Europeans are choosing not to make trips to the UK, but the Brits are still coming to Europe.

@TimWardCam I'll look for it, but every study/indication I've found shows the #Guardian was all in for #remain. Eg:

I think the ludicrous/incompetent dithering after the vote might have pushed them: any decision, even a bad one, can be better than NO decision. I could see that.
I'd reconsider my fatwah on the #Guardian, with respect.
Cheers.

I am the highwayman and I will remain
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of '25
But I am still alive

For UK members (or anyone just interested in such matters) In today's Yougov Poll daily questions #Leave voters were twice as likely as #remain voters to prefer paying for stuff with #cash. And almost half as likely to pay with a phone too (13/24%)
Which seems oddly significant in terms of #Brexit. Or attitudes to modernity Or something.

#Starmer had already betrayed the #Remain cause he championed right up until becoming leader of the opposition. In power shows no sign of doing anything other than tinker around edges of #BorisJohnson’s hard #Brexit.

#Starmer’s rejection of calls to rejoin the single market and customs union defy all logic. Who does he want to keep onboard? Majority now see the truth. That #Brexit was a massive deception that will continue to erode living standards.

....I am in my mid 60s and in good health, voted #Remain and went on several *** to #Brexit marches, have not changed my mind about the stupidity of leaving (in fact my view has hardened as evidence unfurls) but - I doubt I wll see the UK again in the EU within my lifetime - and am unconvinced it would be worth the upheaval given an alternative of closer alignment

@harriettmb @fkamiah17 @Wen @MadeyeTheCarnaptious DUP allowed themselves to be bought by a desperate Theresa May who'd just been panned in the 2017 General Election, & was in minority. In that way the #DUP kept Mrs "Brexit means Brexit" afloat, & delivered Brexit. In doing so, they sold their own citizens in NI, whose expressed democratic preference was for #Remain, down the river. They also delivered it for the entire UK, dissenters included (esp the Scots!), & have earned our undying contempt.

Speculation: I think the penny is finally dropping on the #Remain voters turned #Brexit implementation supporters that have enabled the hard #Brexit we are seeing.

The pandemic (mis)management, the #Ukraine war, the obvious #austerity-induced fragility of public services & the climate crisis that requires decisive action has exposed the frailty of our democracies. People want to be heard.

And #Brexit, no #austerity, in the UK, is the original sin.

We need to clean up our act at home.

Now what is really important is to understanding the timing.

Why does the "penny" drop?

Many protest #Leave voters, as I showed, were ahead of their #Remain peers.

For Leave voting areas we know that this may be because #Brexit is hurting them the hardest.

I show this in:

Now it is NOT surprising that support for "implementing #Brexit" is collapsing.

This support was upheld by the #Remain voters who turned to "support #Brexit" out of their wish to adhere to democratic norms.

This is what the YouGov figures reveals as fundamentally #Brexit never had a broad genuine mandate.

It was the political and media shaping of the narrative around #Brexit to which some of my academic peers contributed that enabled #Brexit to be implemented in its current form.
