can't seem to get the environment reflected in the sphere without enabling diffuse ray bounces, which also makes the scene look way too overexposed and kills the 90s lighting look
procrastinated on getting GPU rendering set up, but ended up being as easy as changing the nix system package list entry from "blender" to "(blender.override { cudaSupport = true; })" and then enabling CUDA in the settings
rendering time went from several minutes to 18s, with most of that time being all the extra subdivision before any rays are even cast
enabling persistent render data shrinks this down to 11!
