For fans (?) of my Canadian Alternatives list: https://codeberg.org/Taffer/canadian-alternatives
I'm probably going to migrate my website/email from Dreamhost to CanSpace; the previous front runner (whc.ca) seems to have ghosted me. They won't answer the question "Do you offer discounts if I pre-pay for multiple years."
@Taffer are there any services that provide static site hosting like github pages/vercel/netlify ?I need somewhere to host a portfolio website. I know of codeberg pages, but they said it needs a rework.
@kjv I’d say try it and see if it works for you; how hard can static pages be?
There’s WorkTree https://about.worktree.ca based in Quebec. They’re using software that might be a little more mature, but I think they’re just getting off the ground. I signed up but haven’t used it for anything yet.
@Taffer @kjv I was going to ask the same question. I moved all my personal repos from github to codeberg and their pages work fine for me. I was looking at WorkTree and they don't seem to have a pages thing. Maybe we can suggest it to them, or maybe it's already in the works.
(FWIW I like codeberg pages even more than github pages, it's as simple and straightforward as can be, no deploy automation it just hosts what's in your pages repo.)
@skylark13 @Taffer oooh nice! I'll give codeberg pages a go. I too like codeberg more than github, so I asked them about pages. They themselves said it is unstable/needs urgent fixing - don't know if they did, but they've been dealing with a lot of attacks lately, so it's understandable.
Haven't heard of worktree before, will try it out when they have it.
Thanks!!
Also, I found something on eu alternatives : https://european-alternatives.eu/product/statichost
@Taffer Yeah, I'm going to give codeberg pages a go. Them saying it needs fixing was why I didn't try before but let me see how it goes. Thanks!
@Taffer Do you know if CanSpace provides SSH access to their web hosting instance? I'm assuming those are good old shared hosting linux instances.
I have been thinking of moving off my current host for a long time now, but before I do, I know I definitely need SSH and Docker access otherwise its a deal breaker for now.
@ozeki they said the could provide ssh access easily if you asked for it, dunno if they do Docker though
Their sales email address answered my questions within a few hours.
@Taffer I will look into it with them then, thank you!
@Taffer Haven't yet done the appropriate research on this, but does anyone know of a Canadian alternative to S3 right off the top of their heads?
@mykl easyBackup E3 is S3 compatible and prices seemed reasonable when I looked
@Taffer Many thanks.
