After dropping my next project (Urban Forest) in April (after 3 months + of prototype), I lost confidence in my ability to finish another project.
The goal is to finish a project, so I can find my next big project.
@ZwodahS you mean you will stop working on it?
If you feel discouraged to finish your projects then I guess It would be better to find a smaller project and not a bigger one?
@Calined
For Urban Forest, dropping it is because of the fact that I am not happy with what I had after 3 months of prototyping and iterating. I might revisit that idea in the future, but for now I probably will not continue it.
Smaller projects help but after the launch of my last game, I started dropping project when the idea feels too small, especially when comparing to Crop Rotation.
I just need to get out of that mindset and just finish games honestly.
@ZwodahS ah yes, then it makes sense and it's good that you drop it, if the prototype doesn't work out
@ZwodahS maybe you can find something where the prototype doesn't take so long or a different way of doing it?
@Calined haha i think the length is fine for urban forest. i tried like many iteration of the ideas during that 3 months. a lot of the time is also spent on upgrading my engine.
@ZwodahS ah you made your own engine, oh wow
Yeah I would say that counts as separate and not towards a prototype
@ZwodahS why do they feel too small for you?
I also know that feeling but it's a good question to see what you value
Is the feeling not epic enough? Is it the story? Is it the playtime? Is it the price tag you can put to it? Is it the amount of mechanics? Is it the feeling of the size of the world?
@Calined small in term of financial mostly. i am doing it full time so it has to make sense. if the idea is too small without a chance of being a commercial, i cant commit too much time to it.
@ZwodahS ah wow yeah OK of course then this also has to be considered
Hm but I imagine a small game could also have a lower price tag and be sold more and then make even more game than a bigger game? Do you think that's possible?
@Calined yeah. thats one of the thing i considered. i dont really want to sell games at a low price point because it set bad precedence for my future games.
also why my games are all priced the same.
@ZwodahS ah
This I wouldn't think as a player
I would think if its a big game then it's more expensive, if its a small game then it's less expensive
Almost a bit that I expect the hour / money ratio of playing it
But also considering how the quality or polish is
If the game would be a 30 hour text adventure I would somehow expect it to be lower in price than a 30 hour 3d character rpg
