About two weeks ago I set out to create a new UI for our , Project Ouroboros. Through experimentation. iteration. staring at A LOT of UIs from other games, and some feedback that I didn't want to but needed to hear, two weeks later I arrived at something I am really quite proud of.

But I also want to talk about the "fails", so head on to the replies if you're interested.

This first one I call "nautical" due to the color combination. It reminded me of X-COM: Terror From The Deep. I quite liked the look but it didn't really fit in the universe of the game and it was missing something.

I tried to fix it by tweaking the colors but it didn't have the result I wanted.

After the "nautical" look, I tried something more flat and modern and came up with the design below. It's also the design I asked for feedback on from here and from my friends. At first I really liked it, but I think it was mostly because I wanted to be done. I was done. I didn't want to look at UIs again for a while. But the look wasn't good, and the feedback reflected that.

And so I went back to the drawing board. I had a chat with a few friends and I looked to a few of my favourite games and games from the genre for inspiration. And that's how I arrived at the amber inspired look shown in the first post.

I am by no means an artist, and there's still a long way to go to polish everything up, but I am really proud of this work and without the failures, it would never exist to begin with.
