WA State Nurses Association in Bellingham, WA, rally today outside St. Joseph PeaceHealth Hospital.

The union has spent 1300 hours trying to negotiate an acceptable contract and is on the verge of a strike.

One sticking point: PeaceHealth has raised their health insurance premiums and copays, while cutting 100 local physicians from their plan, many of whom the nurses had as their long term providers.

On a sunny day, a large crowd of nurses and members of the community gathers on both sides of the street outside the three-story Northwest Medical Center building in Bellingham, WA. Almost all are wearing blue shirts with white lettering identifying the Washington State Nurses Association. Many are holding protest signs, also with a blue and white theme, that say Honk for Nurses, Honk for a Fair Contract, RN Staffing = Patient Safety.

I'm currently staring down a rich, digital chasm of music culture from my hometown, past and present. I want to jump...but I fear I will never return.

There is so much incredible music in the world that will never heard by more than a handful of people that randomly happen to be at a pub... or an independent recording studio... or a party... or listen to a local radio interview with an artist that they met IRL.. Oddly specific, yes.
