Mélusine for #MerMay!

This hand-printed Art Deco-inspired lino block print illustrates Mélusine at her bath, spied through a keyhole. Mélusine was the legendary half-fairy ancestor of the House of Lusignan and royals including the Plantagenets, whose lower half became a serpent when she bathed. She married a nobleman but insisted he must never observe her in the bath; of course he did, and she left him. 🧵

May I introduce myself? I'm Phymatocerra aterrima, the Solomon's seal #sawfly. My larvae are extreme gourmets: they can eat only leaves of #SolomonsSeal and #LilyOfTheValley. If you kill the habitats of these plants, we can't survive. Therefore, we love the #forests of #VosgesDuNord and our photographer's wild #garden.

Macro of Phymatocera aterrima living exclusively on Salomon's seal or Convallaria. It's black (in the sunshine blueish-metallic black) and has 4 crumpled looking wings. The richness of biodiversity depends often on how many different food plants exist for extremely specialised animals like this wasp. Their larvae need leaves of this small spectrum of plants.
