This Week, I'm looking back at BBC2's Chess Masters.

Was this a chess show played by humans; or a human interest show using chess as a metaphor? Because the programme fell between stools and made depressingly little sense.

Plus! Some words about Genius Game, the ITV show you would enjoy.

Look, you're on Mastodon, and Genius Game is the most Mastodon show since Only Connect. And it's got David Tennant!

Some bits from Claire Hooper's House of Games.

Very similar to Richard Osman's show, down to the eyebrow-raise in the opening titles.

Different lighting, more background music, shocking lack of buzzer competence.

Even slower pace than BBC2's show, and they give examples of "Rhyme Time".

But the spirit is there, and if it works for the Aussies...

Looks like nobody on the Fediverse is tooting about #99ToBeat, the ITV show where normal people are given simple challenges, with the one instruction: don't come last.

The show is rather moreish: we don't have to think about on the game, so can grow to love the players. Some dodgy commentary and production decisions don't help, but it looks great and has loads of heart.

And I've an excuse to finish a Task Taxonomy, I'll come back to that.

Six songs, for and against Europe.

It's my annual Eurovision Song Contest preview, examining entries from hosts SRG SSR, from GPB, RTÉ, SBS, PBS, and the BBC.

Plus digressions! Mary Whitehouse! Geopolitical concerns! The deep history of "My Camp Rock"! Why Radio 2's favourite Eurovision song is not mine!

And thoughts on why ITV cancelled Dancing on Ice, and evidence that right-wingers get lots of time on reality shows.
