We had a mix of weather and sea conditions for a day of scenic cruising after Punta Arenas. Reaching the point where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans met we got the sort of rough seas we'd been hoping for around Cape Horn. The ship was lurching and twisting and it was immense fun overnight. The following day was calmer, bright and sunny, but as we cruised into the Chilean fjords the clouds came in bringing with them rain for our approach to and time spent admiring the Amalia Glacier. This was our first time seeing a glacier.

A moody, overcast view with thick, grey cloud low down and smothering the scene. We're on water at the end of a fjord looking to land where a wide U-shaped valley reaches down to the shore. The rough, rocky sides of the valley are dotted with dark bushes and vegetation almost as black as the rock they're on. Stretching across the width of the shoreline there is a glacier, dozens of metres high, roughly cracked in vertical jags of blue piercing the white ice. The glacier rises and steps back through the valley and over a small, dark rise it disappears high into the valley until it reaches the cloud that covers its uppermost reaches. A solitary berg of ice is in the flat water ahead of the shallow, pale golden shore that forms a narrow border between the fjord and glacier.

#NowPlaying yet another record I somehow missed last year, 2024's 'A Distant, Violent Shudder' by Boston, Massachusetts' GLACIER. Heavy/beautiful instrumental post-metal or post rock. Strong Pelican or Isis vibes. Recommended.

Fifth day of the previous year's #Switzerland trip. Taking the Bernina Line, highest railway crossing in Europe, one of the steepest in the world. We went from #SanktMoritz to #Tirano, and then changed to a regular Italian train to #Milano.

First view: #Morteratsch station. When the station was built in 1908, the plain next to it was the lip of the Morteratsch glacier. The glacier is now 3 km away.🧵

View from Morteratsch station, towards what in 1908 used to be the end of the glacier tongue. It is now a flat plain, overgrown with alpine trees, mostly conifers. It is early June, all the plants are vibrantly green. In the far back, snowed Alps can be seen.
View over an empty glacial U valley. The glacier has receded long ago, enough for the trees to start growing in the old ice bed. It now only shows in the end of the valley, where it is still connected to the fresh snow from Alpine peaks. It is early June, the trees are green, the Alps still fully covered with snow.

2024 European State of the Climate (ESOTC) report

Key messages:
a)
#Europe experienced its warmest year, with the second highest number of heat stress days and tropical nights, on record.

b)
The area of Europe experiencing days with temperatures below freezing is decreasing, with the year seeing the largest area on record with fewer than three months (90 days) of frost days. The number of ‘cold stress days’ was the lowest on record.

c)
For the European region and for the Mediterranean Sea, the annual sea surface temperature was the highest on record. It was also the warmest year on record for European lakes.

d)
#Glaciers in #Scandinavia and #Svalbard saw their highest recorded annual rates of mass loss. They also saw the largest mass loss of any #glacier region globally.

e)
Western Europe saw one of the ten wettest years on record and Europe experienced the most widespread #flooding since 2013.

f)
The year saw a record proportion of electricity generation by renewables, at 45%
