idk about you all, but my salary has NOT experienced even remotely the same increases as those grocery items in this four-year span... hmmm...

Similar table to the one in the first toot, looking at the three shrinkflated items by price per 100ml or grams. The increases are (of course) even more insane than before: +180% for the Classico pasta sauce, +80% for the Campbell's soup, and +71% for Ritz crackers.

ok so. I saw a Short yesterday from some dude who compared his 2022 Walmart order vs the same items in 2025. It went from something like $160 to $440 (!).

since I have today off, I went back to a grocery order from 2021 (pickup because covid) and did the same thing, grabbing current prices for each item.

.... I wished I hadn't

(this is in #Edmonton, #Alberta, Canada. Comparison for the "shrinkflated" items is in the next toot.)

A table showing the change in grocery prices for 11 items from 2021 to now. The columns are: Item; Price per Item in 2021 and 2025; Increase; and "gotchas" (like shrinkflation). The most egregious increases are 125% for BBQ size wieners, 92% for Classico pasta sauce, and 72% for Campbell's soup. However, even the smallest increase is 20% - the rest of the items are somewhere in between. Caveats: - Item comparison is limited to items where a direct comparison was possible. e.g. this excludes veggies and fruit, which are measured by gram & where we don't know the exact amount that was in our order, as well as items that they do not stock anymore. - Items may have been on sale when we purchased them in 2021; that is not visible from the order record. - These increases do NOT even take shrinkflation into consideration; the pasta sauce, Campbell's soup, and Ritz crackers all have less Stuff in the containers now, which obv factors into the pricing. I might do another comparison that looks at price per ml or gram.

The discovery of 27 cases of #scurvy in a northern #Saskatchewan community is raising concerns about #GroceryPrices and access to fresh food as #IncomeInequality worsens.

Earlier this year, a doctor in #LaRonge had a hunch that a patient was suffering from scurvy, a #disease caused by #VitaminC deficiency. The test came back positive and it raised questions about the prevalence of scurvy in the community.

The #LacLaRongeIndianBand partnered with Dr. Jeff Irvine and the Northern InterTribal #Health Authority to investigate. Irvine is a physician in La Ronge and works with Northern #Medical Services, an off-shoot of the University of Saskatchewan college of #medicine.
