Upheaval in Washington Hinders Campaign Against #BirdFlu
Called #H5N1, does not yet seem to be able to spread from person to person. But with one recent mutation, it seems to have moved closer to becoming a human contagion, a worrisome development.
This week, an international group of #virologists concluded that turning back #bird #flu would require continuous monitoring of milk from dairy farms, wastewater and people working with infected animals.

Since bird flu first appeared on American dairy farms about a year ago, it has spread to more than 1,000 cattle herds in 17 states.

Underage workers, millions of dollars and trucks full of dead chickens — inside the business of killing in response to bird flu

The federal government has a single contractor to assist with killing infected flocks, leading to delays and the use of controversial culling methods.

Top virologists urge world leaders to act now on rising threat of H5N1 pandemic.

So far, just in the US, >995 dairy herds, 168 million birds, and at least 70 human infections, plus 1 human death. Sporadic outbreaks in wild birds, backyard flocks, wild mammals, domestic cats, all amplifying risk to humans. And, particularly alarming, several human infections with no known contact with infected animals.

Current sequence data shows ongoing mutations and genetic reassortment.

@mossyrua @ianb seriously, our meat over here in the US has a bunch of H5N1 in it at this point. They don’t want to test it because they don’t want to know it’s unsafe.

We’ve had some humans sick with this disease that have been nowhere near livestock or farms or live chickens. Our government tells us this, then never mentions it again. The people in their household don’t work on farms either.

I’m not a scientist or a medical provider, I’m not a farmer so this is purely speculative, but if these people aren’t getting the bird flu from contact with living animals or other people, I’m going to assume it’s because they ate it. And I’m not joining them.

If I’m proven wrong, great. Awesome. The only consequence to me for being wrong is that I saved money not buying meat and I didn’t add to the suffering of innocent animals. I can totally live with that.

#USDA confirms 6 more #H5N1 #birdflu infected dairy herds in Idaho, which is now up to 71 herds.
36 of those have been detected since late February.
Idaho is the nation's 3rd largest diary producer, with over 350 farms. This may not stop soon.
Cumulative national total: 1,031 herds in 17 states.

"Effective Monday, the FDA suspended its proficiency testing program for Grade "A" raw milk and finished products."

Not clear on what they mean by "finished products" & whether that is all raw or not.

Say what you will about raw milk (I'll block anybody who says they deserve to get sick), but there was testing in place. Now it's gone.

They've already suspended testing for #H5N1 #BirdFlu

Seems like it's just cow to glass now with a stop at the pasteurizer.

This is good news though:

To date, all samples tested have been confirmed as seasonal subtypes H1 or H3, which rules out infection with #H5N1 [bird flu]. The fact that no other human cases of H5N1 have been identified via subtyping efforts is reassuring," the California spokesperson said.

I am glad they’re doing this, but also this makes me think that they’re low key admitting there’s an airborne risk to people from farms.

#CBS censored...producer quit because...no...freedom to make his own stories?
Is this what killed #60Minutes?

Recent show on #birdflu and #H5N1 was kinda informative (and scarry) imo. Maybe CBS has lessened control?
