Current patient: Harman-Kardon PM655 Vxi.
At the moment the right channel is only about 5% of the volume of the left one. Since this amp can be split (pre- vs. main amp) it was easy to find the problem is with the main amp section. Next step is to figure out what's wrong. There are several options, like a broken rail voltage supply or one of that ~15 transistors that precede the main output ones (those I've already checked).
Several years ago, my FIL made me a gift of all his #hifi equipment, since he and his wife were downsizing. The crown jewel of his setup was a Transcriptors Skeleton turntable. It needed some love, more love than I could give it, but I was lucky enough to find a local tech who has restored multiple Skeletons. He did a heck of a job. I picked it up this weekend.
I lost count of how many records we listened to yesterday, well into the night. #audiophile #vinyl
Saturday morning's work: recapping assorted boards of a hifi amp, resoldering all the thermally/physically stressed joints and a few dodgy looking ones. Then a thorough PCB wash and how stuff is drying.
If anyone can guess the amplifier model, you win one (1) brownie point.
AUDIOPHILE MAN - HiFi REVIEW: SERENE PLATTER MAT FROM STACK AUDIO
Do we really need another turntable platter mat? Paul Rigby thought not until he saw this new design from Stack Audio. To read the review, click: https://theaudiophileman.com/serene-platter-mat-from-stack-audio-2/ #turntable #vinyl #platter #mat #silicon #review #HiFi #audiophile #stack
Been "doing me" a bit lately to try and bring things back on track. Got round to hooking my 50th birthday pressie to me #Quad303 amp up to my #RogersLS6A speakers. I don't think mastodon does #vintagehifi but I am absolutely loving this combination. For a polite British #hifi setup, it has the most glorious low end for #reggae Lovely sound need not be expensive!
This week in the lab: A Marantz CD 73, an early CD player from 1983. Symptoms: A loud whine coming from the back with erratic behaviour, flickering lights. The loading mechanism moves sometimes, it tries to spin the disc (which usually means the pickup mostly works), but can't play. #vintage #hifi #marantz #repair
AUDIOPHILE MAN - HiFi REVIEW: X-i75 AMPLIFIER FROM ADVANCE PARIS
This meaty looking integrated Class AB amplifier packs 75W into 8 Ohms and is bristling with features. Paul Rigby goes old school. To read the review, click: https://theaudiophileman.com/x-i75-amplifier-from-advance-paris/ #amplifier #amp #review #technology #HiFi #audiophile #paris
Finally scratched my itch to get a record player and some vinyl. I debated about getting a vertical player (for example the Fuse Vert) but decided against it based off "the expert opinions". I ended up with a AT-LP60X and Edifier R1280DB speakers. #vinyl #turntables #hifi
Now to go spend even more money on records :) I have no idea what I am getting into!
It is the year of someone's Lord 2025, and you can still buy a brand new 5-pack of blank #Maxell #Audio #Cassette #tapes. I love that this is a thing, and hope it keeps being a thing for years/decades to come.

On the bench today: A B780 I bought last weekend as defective with a badly distorted left channel (the negative part of the waveform was missing). First evaluation: Distorted left channel on headphones out, but not on preamp out, so it must be a fault on the left power amp. Missing half wave excludes a dirty relais, potentiometer or switch. #repair #hifi #vintage #revox
