The idea of 2001, but with Gene Wilder as HAL (played absolutely straight), has largely overwritten my memories of the original. I won't say Kubrick should have considered him, but it would have been an interesting case of subverting expectations.

Finally saw 2001: A Space Odyssey
Here’s my synopsis:

Part 1: Ape men shouting. so much shouting

Part 2: the part everyone remembers with iconic space travel shots and HAL, which could’ve been a kick-ass movie

Part 3: Let’s experience what it’s like to do LSD, probably! Woohooo!

My review: a whole HOUR could’ve been edited out of this movie for PACING reasons, and nothing would’ve been lost.

Just finished watching Kubrick's 2001 with my teenage son. Impressed that it was made in 1968 and spotted a number of scenes that have influenced later films that he knows, but we agreed that it would have benefitted from editing down significantly and that all in all it was rather odd (and in parts funny when it probably was not intended to be).

Because I’m a crazy completionist, I’m watching Fear and Desire. It definitely feels like a student film project. And in a way it was, he just wasn’t in school. But he was teaching himself to be a director.

Of course, it helps to have a rich uncle willing to indulge in your artistic pursuits.

This could easily be a stage play, only has four roles.

Watching The Killing (1956). One of the few Kubrick films I haven’t seen before. In fact I think I just need his first two and I’ve got a complete collection.

Definitely giving some noir vibes so far.

But also a classic heist feel. Although I doubt things will go well for them.

I watched "Eyes Wide Shut" last night at a sold out theater showing. Pretty great that Kubrick made a film about a closeted gay man in a sham marriage living in NYC in the late 90's, got Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman to star in it, and marketed it as an "erotic thriller". Well done.
