So even though I am not in a state that National Public Data recognizes as having a right to OPT-OUT, I sent an OPT-OUT demand to them this morning because the information they had on me that got leaked was a mix of accurate and inaccurate info.

To my surprise, they responded within hours. In their email they wrote, in part:

"We have removed the entire database from our system. We may be required to retain certain records to comply with legal obligations; we will retain your request and our response for our records. Please note that while we are unable to edit or remove third-party data about you, including in public records, we will not sell your personal information through our services."

I hadn't seen anything on their website statement/notice about them removing the database from their system.

Interesting....

National Public #Data confirms breach exposing Social Security numbers

Looks like #NPD has finally come out and confirmed that at least some of the data leaked came from their systems. They don’t provide much information though.

You’d think they’d be a little more forthcoming, given the situation. But that’s obviously asking for too much.

Reminder: even if your email is found in this breach, it doesn’t necessarily mean your SSN was leaked. A portion of the data is also inaccurate (wrong SSNs to the wrong people, for example) and many people have repeated rows (which may hold inaccurate information.) The data allegedly also includes information of deceased individuals. The data also includes UK and Canadian citizens.

The 2.9 billion records cited in the major news outlets does NOT mean 2.9 billion unique records. There are not 2.9 billion SSNs.

Hackers may have leaked the #SocialSecurity Numbers (#SSN) of every #American
A dump of 2.7 billion records includes names, aliases and known physical addresses.
The data, which is unencrypted, is believed to have been obtained from a #databroker called #NationalPublicData.
On August 6th, a #threatactor known as "#Fenice" leaked the most complete version of the stolen National Public Data data for free on the #Breached hacking forum.

@hkrn It's always funny when data breaches are revealed through lawsuits.

2.9 BILLION PEOPLE's PII was stolen from National Public Data, dating as far back as 30 years, and includes social security numbers, full names, former and current addresses.

NPD is a background check and fraud prevention company.

National Public Data collected some of the information through website scraping. Everyone should be compensated accordingly imo, the collected data to be destroyed, and National Public Data to be shut down.
