As a #Pedestrian this is what I encounter all the damn time. If you’re not in a car, you are are a fourth-class citizen at best in th UK, barely even an afterthought. Car drivers will happily block the footway for their own convenience and laziness, driving pedestrians out into traffic. Footway are poorly maintained, uneven and often barely wide enough for one person to walk on, while the mighty car gets tens of millions of pounds in road improvements so that Johnny BMW Driver isn’t inconvenienced and doesn’t feel any potholes while driving his shiny toy.

@tom_andraszek I think we've got a not dissimilar reference point.

For me, its Laisves alėja in Kaunas (in Lithuania).

There's two rows of trees down the middle.

There's park benches under many of those trees.

The generally accepted rule is that you cycle (or skateboard) in that area.

There's a wide pedestrian space either side.

The buildings on either side are around four storeys tall.

You have shops and cafés on the ground floor, with all fresco dining.

You have small offices (doctors, dentists) and apartments on the floors above.

The pedestrianised street runs the entire length of the Kaunas CBD.

It begins in the old town, near Kaunas Castle and the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers.

It runs around 1.6 kilometres east.

There are trolleybuses running parallel along the streets one block north and one block south.

It would be worthwhile for Australian urban planners to head out to Kaunas just to see this one street.

I guarantee they'd learn a lot about what a pedestrianised space should be.

Bizzare #vandalism - someone has taken the effort to climb a light column on #pedestrian refuge in middle of the village and obscure keep left #sign with grey paint (they have also done the same to smaller sign on the #bollard, can't be seen in photo due to darkness). Seems more sociopathic than normal #graffiti (maybe someone pissed off the refuge is there in first place, it discourages speeding through the village, or angry that the local Speedwatch have put up a camera nearby?) #Suffolk

I noticed that it has become incredibly difficult for me to speak about #politics with relatives and other people I don't have a close relationship with.

Personally I think that in general left-wing ideas are more humane and closer to science and real-life. I strive for ideals like better #cyclist and #pedestrian #infrastructure, #equality, #EV mandates, public #healthcare, #publictransport, etc..

I certainly don't blindly agree with everything, but in general I am "left" in most topics.
