Nowadays the data miners can correlate data from seemingly unrelated sources and draw conclusions. It seems that prophesies of doom reaching a crescendo in the media correlates with increased sales of toilet paper. So when your local supermarket manager reports that sales of toilet paper have become astronomical it's time to go home and put your affairs in order and open that bottle of fine claret you've been saving because the end of the world is nigh.

@MarkAssPandi : there are ! A very good but quite dark South Korean show like that was #SegyeuiKkeut (or #TheEndoftheWorld https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_End_of_the_World_(TV_series) ). It's fairly short. A bit longer is Belgian series #Cordon (which I found better than its US remake #Containment, and also longer, so https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordon_(TV_series) ), which shows not just the scientific part but how the authorities deal with the event, and how the contained neighborhood reacts.
