between a wire and post fence with mixed wood behind on the right and open mixed woods to the left is a narrow cleared area. Close to where the viewer stands, a tree has fallen from the left across this open area. The tree broke as it fell and the upper part fell back toward the left, so it missed the fence on the right. The trunk is something like 12-15 inches 30-40cm diameter at the widest part, with many small and large branches on the ground, all lightly covered in fresh snow.

To the left, the base of a moderate sized apple tree trunk (20cm 8" diameter, maybe) dark and furrowed, in shadow, rises from the snow. The sun is coming through trees out of sight beyond the apple tree, casting blue shadows over the snow, shining weakly through, just enough to make the myriad frost crystals on the snow surface sparkle.

A single fairly large dry balsam poplar leaf spear tip shaped with its stem to the left, angling down to lower right and seen not quite straight on is wedged between numerous thin branches and trunks of poplar suckers/saplings. The leaf is backlit by sun and is a rich gold leaning to brown, with numerous dark specks plus veins showing. Some of the twigs behind also cast dark shadows. The ground blurrily visible behind the branches is snowy with golden grass here and there, and a shadowed area of woods farther back. A slight filter intensifies the colours a bit and gives a hint of violet. A white vignette effect has also been applied top and bottom
