Two Japanese tourists in their 20s were detained for two weeks in China, then deported, for taking photos showing an exposed buttocks at the Great Wall, local media reported. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/03/14/japan/japanese-tourists-china-great-wall/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #china #tourism #greatwall #worldheritage

This photograph was taken in China close to the Great Wall.
The Great Wall is not a single-structured wall, it includes beacon towers, barriers, barracks, garrison stations, and fortresses along the walls, together forming an integrated defence system.

With the Chinese new year upon us, I was wondering what might have happened to "[t]he 38-year-old man and 55-year-old woman [who] were working near the affected area, the 32nd Great Wall [and] dug a 'big gap' by widening an existing cavity of the Great Wall so that their excavator could pass through it. Police say they wanted to reduce the distance they had to travel."
Funny, I don't see any mention of them since the incident...

The Great Wall of China has some mysterious gaps that have puzzled historians for centuries. A new study reveals that they were caused by natural erosion and human activity, not by design or strategy. The researchers used satellite imagery and field surveys to map the wall and its surroundings. https://www.newsweek.com/ancient-grenades-discovered-along-great-wall-china-1835085 #greatwall #china #archaeology
Mostly because I shared this on Instagram today as well.
This is the Great Wall of China, taken on the second day of our honeymoon in 2008, which was also the second day of the very first time we'd left the country to travel together. We've done a fair bit of travelling since but this is still one of the most impressive sights we've had the luck and utter joy to experience.

s:/ Every other week, the #CCP government of #China seems keen to provide further reasons why #decoupling from the economy behind the #GreatWall and boycottig any #RoadAndBelt initiatives (aka new #SilkRoad) is an excellent idea...
Other than that, I think I have read something about seismic bombs, or maybe it was still just #SciFi, but who knows... /s
