Nepenthes gracilis, a clone I’ve nicknamed “Shadow.” A widespread and variable species found throughout much of Southeast Asia, typically producing small pitchers on long tangled vines. This one originated from Bornean parentage, and is one of the coveted “black” variants; lower pitchers get deep purple to almost black, spotted with a couple shades of lighter purple that make a dappled shadowy appearance, and even the leaves flush with purple. Uppers like this image are paler, but still that mottled purple-black color overall.

Nepenthes leonardoi, a rare ultra-endemic species of pitcher plant from the mountains of Palawan, Philippines. All-black clones seen in the wild made headlines, as did the naming of the plant after a prominent botanist in the region who was unfortunately shot while surveying plants by a militia group. Pitchers can reach almost 6 inches tall, with prominent teeth.

I received this highlands pitcher plant (Nepenthes glandulifera) as a gift at the end of November and it is growing like mad. I'm waiting for the oldest pitcher to fully die back before I trim it off the plant, which detracts from its appearance, but the 3 newest pitchers are growing quickly and ready to take its place. I was worried about caring for this plant that loves moisture because I live in such an arid environment.

Borneo's mountains reveal a #NewSpecies of #orangutan-colored giant pitcher plant phys.org/news/2024-12-borneo-m

#Sabah’s hidden giant: #Nepenthes pongoides, a micro-#endemic tropical #PitcherPlant from northern #Borneo. By Alviana Damit et al. publish.csiro.au/BT/BT24050

"The purpose of the pitcher is to capture both rainfall and insects... This newest species was found able to grow to 45 centimeters and to hold over two liters of water."

Hey folks - are there any #nepenthes #pitcherplant / #carnivorousplant carers out there?

Mine has been happily hanging about in the same place for a couple of years but recently some of the leaves have gone black at the sides. At first I thought it was just the older ones but then a newer one has done it too.

The baby pup is doing just fine, and the new growth looks ok...

The soil is moist, not wet (measured with a hygrometer) and it's a well draining mix.

Maybe it is just a delayed dormancy - anyone had this and if so, do I need I worry? If is happening on about 1 in 3 leaves.
