FediJam

Hello everyone! 👋 The FediJam is the world's first (?) game jam exclusively for users of the Fediverse. During September, team up with others and... CREATE - A - GAME! Analog or digital, using whatever (non-AI) tools you feel comfortable with.

Boosts VERY appreciated! ❤️ Spread the word!!!

itch.ioFediJamA game jam from 2024-08-31 to 2024-10-07 hosted by njamster & vacuumbeef. The FediJam is a month-long game jam for users of the Fediverse . Make a game (analog or digital, any tools, but no AI) in as little or as much time a...

@maksu @houkime Good find! Thank you for sharing. Looks like we'll have to aim for BIGGEST game jam exclusively for fedi users then. 😁

@fedi_jam if anyone wants to create a game that implements ActivityPub, I am happy to support

@evan @fedi_jam
I’m presently writing a game aimed at #FediHams, i.e. Masto folks who’re also #HamRadio ops. Part of gameplay needs a way to share 110-byte txt file w/ other players. Need an easy way to…
1. hear a station on the radio
2. look them up
3. download their txt file, which show current status of their “board” so you know which grid squares you could play against.

But I have zero idea if that could be done w/ ActivityPub via Python. Thoughts?

@mensrea @fedi_jam @evan
Actual radio. Like I contact someone on 20m phone, exchange a couple salvos, each earns points. Then we agree to switch to CW (morse code), exchange at least 1 salvo on that different mode, earns a multiplier. Switch to RTTY, get another multiplier. Combines a radio event with a game of Battleship.

@fedi_jam
Is there a way to find a team to join?

@geos You can make a post in the community forum over on itch: itch.io/jam/fedi-jam/community Or try your luck by posting under the jam's official hashtag:

itch.ioCommunity - FediJam

@FediThing Thanks! I'm not sure I have a game jam in me at the moment but you never know, the excitement might get to me :D

@rybson Thanks! Looks like there were several even earlier ones, see: mastodon.gamedev.place/@maksu/

@fedi_jam previous fedijams had a rule/suggestion that participants use Free & Open Source software. why does this jam not have such a rule?

@janWilejan Quite simply: Because we didn't think of it! 😅

We won't make it a rule, but would definitely encourage people to use FOSS tools for this and/or open source their projects. We'll add a corresponding passage to the jam page later today. Thanks for your input, appreciated!

@fedi_jam
I just read the description. How an analog game can compete in the audio category? The criteria are tailored for a video game.

@kris Yes, you're of course right! That's an oversight on our end. 🙈 We'll figure out a solution! Just take our word for now, that we have no intention to punish people that go for an analog game – on the contrary, actually!

@fedi_jam unfortunately I'll be moving during this month but i'll keep an eye! Good luck to everyone!

@fedi_jam Create a game using ActivityPub, or just generally create a game?

@marnanel Just generally create a game! That being said, we won't stop you if you want to integrate ActivityPub in your game in some form or another. Should that be the case, @evan kindly offered his assistance, see:

@fedi_jam @evan One of the things I was going to do with kepi is to have something like chess or backgammon or connect-four on distributed servers.

Back in the days of AIM, they used to put games in that you could play against other users. Some years in the winter they added a snowball game.

There are straightforward ways of adding the game move and structure information to ActivityPub. But what if the game ID pointed to an implementation via sandboxed JavaScript? So you could play any game you were challenged to, like distributed boardgamearena.

I've pretty much given up on kepi though, unfortunately.

@fedi_jam oooooo this could be fun we should look into this
would be a good excuse to learn more about coding

@fedi_jam i’d partecipate, but @fedigear and university and other things got me busy enough for a while…

good luck to all partecipants!
