Jesus. Update on the guy who was taken from Columbia University. Sounds like he's effectively been disappeared.
How long before 47 starts suspending habeas corpus across the board?

Is there a way to donate to his legal fund?

actionnetwork.orgDemand the Immediate Release of Palestinian Student Activist Mahmoud Khalil from DHS detention On the evening of March 8, 2025, Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil was detained by the Department of Homeland Security. The arrest comes on the heels of the Department of State’s announcement that it plans to deport students affiliated with pro-Palestine protests. The student, who is Palestinian, is a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. Columbia University, which recently published a new protocol on its plans to cooperate with ICE, has targeted Khalil for his Palestinian identity and outspoken activism on multiple occasions over the last 17 months. He served as a lead negotiator during the Gaza Solidarity Encampment last spring and has frequently appeared in media interviews and press conferences. Columbia’s continued acquiescence to federal agencies and outside partisan institutions has made this situation possible. Like many other Arab and Muslim students, Khalil has been the target of various zionist harassment campaigns, fueled by doxxing websites like Canary Mission. This racist targeting serves to instill fear in pro-Palestine activists as well as a warning to others. Add your name to demand the immediate release of Palestinian student activist Mahmoud Khalil from DHS detention and a reversal to Columbia University's protocol permitting ICE on campus without a warrant.

@fkamiah17 @donray

I may do that, but I don't think a petition is going to make any difference to ICE or Trump. The courts are doing a good job so far of upholding the law. I'm looking for a way to help him with paying his lawyer.

@Professor_Stevens @donray I'm of your view when it comes to petitions these days. Ditto editorials in newspapers or "strongly worded letters", or anything else of that ilk. The parameters have fundamentally changed. X is back up now, so I'm going to look for some information on how to donate, as originally asked.
As an aside, with regard to your point about the courts, I think the operative words there are "so far".

@fkamiah17 @donray

Yup. I'm not against petition, letters, etc. Every little bit helps. But, anecdotally: I was an elected official once. I got shown a fair number of petitions. The ones with ink on paper made an impression on me. The ones on the web always had eight-billion "signatures" and, when I asked people about the statement, I found out most of them didn't actually read it first. Clicking is just too easy to mean much.

And, yeah, so far. But you fight with what you got.

@Professor_Stevens @donray Oh, I'm not against them per se either, but I don't put any faith in them either, particularly online ones. I've seen enough of them here with actual millions of signatures be "debated in Parliament" - half a dozen dusty old gits in Westminster Hall (not the Commons chamber), chuntering for an hour with zero results. It's called slacktivism for a reason after all.
You fight with what you've got until you get new things to fight with. We need to find them NOW.

@fkamiah17 @donray

Each person's got a different set of resources with which to fight (including time, money, and courage, among others). So, same as you, I'm okay with petitions, but I encourage people to donate, speak at public hearings, join activist groups, attend marches/rallies, volunteer on a campaign, run for office, write letters, write books even, host a meeting, go to law school, whatever fits for each person as an individual. There's lots to choose from.

@Professor_Stevens @donray For sure, I'm not going to denigrate anyone for doing or not doing one thing or another - we all have different abilities, time constraints etc. What I mean to say is that those who are willing to have to start thinking outside the box.

@Professor_Stevens @donray Well you've been proved right so far. Federal judge Jesse Furman has ordered that former Colombia student Mahmoud Khalil’s removal from the U.S. be halted pending a further hearing on a petition re. the Trump admin’s removal order.
You can read the order here:

@Professor_Stevens @donray I guess we'll see what happens at the habeas hearing on Wednesday.
"So far" is all we've got for the moment.

@fkamiah17 @donray

Is the habeas petition online anywhere public? Those tend to be pretty pro forma, but they are sometimes detailed. Would like to see that.

One thing we had going for us in Trump 1.0 is that he insists on arguing all cases the same way: I'm the president so I have unlimited power. That always loses. Here, he is seeking to revoke legal resident status by inferring from Khalil's speech that he's giving aid to terrorists. That's a 1A violation. No president has that much power.

@Professor_Stevens @donray The only related docs I've seen are what I've posted I'm afraid.
I'm disinclined to rule out entirely an as yet unforeseen development, but I don't know enough about US law to even speculate about that.

@Professor_Stevens @donray Yeah, that was attached to my original reply about an hour ago 😁

@fkamiah17 @donray

Somewhat surprisingly, it leaves his attorney's email address visible. I've emailed her to ask about donations for legal costs. Will post any reply I can.

@Professor_Stevens @donray Cheers. I haven't managed to track anything down on that front.

@fkamiah17 @donray

I imagine she's in four-alarm mode right now. That order you found calls for some serious lawyering on a very short schedule. With any luck, though, I won't be the only one asking and a paralegal or other staffer can answer such emails.

God, I cannot believe the United States of America is arresting people without charges, detaining them in sequestration, because of things they say. Yet, I have to, because it's happening.
