There is no capturable metric for enjoyment. What products/games can capture is engagement and that is then misinterpreted as enjoyment. There are a lot of products I engage with because I want want they produce, but I am unhappy.
@grumpygamer@gamedev.place The engagement rate with constipation is through the roof. Must be fun. Mortal Kombat 1's grind feels exactly like this.
@grumpygamer Are you unhappy because you didn't enjoy the products, or are you unhappy in general?
@grumpygamer this hits hard. I am often asked to measure usage of some part of software — when I ask "Why? How will the metric data be used?" I often hear crickets.
@grumpygamer agreed, sir. well said
why I try explicitly to NOT add "grinding" mechanics to my hobby game designs. solving is good. grinding just to level up to grind some more to level up more just to grind more to level up more -- like: stop I want off those trains

Everybody is looking for something
@grumpygamer I've been doing my best to stop playing games that I find excessively engaging - i.e. compulsive. A bit of it can be helpful to draw me in so it's not entirely bad but it's a fine line to walk.
@grumpygamer Indeed. I hate they way "engagement" has pervaded everything. YouTube seems particularly bad at the moment for serving up hour-long videos where I find myself sucked into watching only to realise after 20 minutes that I'm not having fun, I'm just sat there watching something that's joylessly and mechanically trying to keep my attention with the promise that the interesting bit is going to happen any moment now. (It never does)
@grumpygamer Steam reviews are a pretty good guide tho :)
@grumpygamer True. Facebook is always optimizing for “engagement”. Worst game ever.
@grumpygamer I unsuccessfully argued this from inside one really really big example of this and was ignored. It also made unhappy to know that I couldn’t fix it.
That’s very true and it’s something you and the LucasArts adventure game design teams understood for decades.
In some of the conversations with Daniel Albu one of you explained that games had to be a certain length to feel good value, but the challenge was not to just add unsolvable or repetitive puzzles.
Your games have done well in that regard.
@grumpygamer I “engaged” with my gaming PC for about 2 hours yesterday, because Bluetooth broke after an update, again, and even google was no help. I think even my neighbors knew there was no enjoyment in those two hours. JFC windows is garbage. Even after 35 years they can’t make a product that actually works and _keeps_ working.
