PSA: How to open a Tesla door in an emergency

I have friends that happily drive their kids around strapped into child seats in Teslas. I ask them a few questions about this, and I've never had a friend of mine who is a parent answer these questions satisfactorily:

1) Do you know that Tesla doors might not open if there's no power?

2) Do you know how to manually open the doors?

3) Have you timed how long it would take you to get your kids out?

Here's how to get out

I would never buy a Tesla for reasons, but a lot of y'all do.🤷🏿‍♂️

This is not a joke. There's no punch line. No witty retorts. If you drive a Tesla, you need to know how to get out of one if the power is cut. This can happen in a minor accident, or if you find yourself in too deep water.

If you're in a minor accident and the battery cell cracks, it could be minutes until the car is engulfed in flames. Battery fires are worse than gasoline fires.

If you're in water? EVs are heavy. They sink fast.

If you don't practice this and commit it to muscle memory *before* you're in an accident or floating in a pond, you will not 1) read the owner's manual, 2) figure it out 3) and calmly execute the procedure, all while you're in an emergency situation.

You don't have enough time. You could have only a minute or so before the car is either engulfed in flames, or completely submerged in water. You might be concussed or disoriented. And adrenaline dumps reduce coordination.

@mekkaokereke When I got my pilots license, most of the training was dealing with emergencies. When one happened to me it was amazing how muscle memory kicked in.

Indeed. Spent some time in a cockpit myself. Most of the training isn't about flying, but how to get down safely in case of emergency. Any landing you walk away from is a good one.

That said, there is no chance in hell I will ever crawl into a Tesla.
