Exploding Mittens - Getting to grips with huge SKOS datasets Creators: Posthumus, Etienne The ICONCLASS classification system contains more than 1 million SKOS nodes in English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Dutch, Polish and Czech- in short a non-trivial large corpus of Linked Data. It is possible to load the data into performant triplestores, but becomes challenging in a production setting. Query performance using conventional SPARQL constructs is unacceptable to end-users, and finding relevant search results for users queries is an informational retrieval challenge due to the redundant yet slightly variant nature of the Art Historical classification data. We created a virtual Linked Data query engine that integrates a SPARQL API with semantic embeddings using BERT based transformers and RDF2Vec knowledge graph embeddings to provide performant queries in the Dutch Netwerk Digitaal Erfgoed termen netwerk.

NatureBracing for impact: how shifting precipitation extremes may influence physical climate risks in an uncertain future - Scientific ReportsAs extreme precipitation intensifies under climate change, traditional risk models based on the ‘100-year return period’ concept are becoming inadequate in assessing real-world risks. In response, this nationwide study explores shifting extremes under non-stationary warming using high-resolution data across the contiguous United States. Results reveal pronounced variability in 100-year return levels, with Coastal and Southern regions displaying the highest baseline projections, and future spikes are anticipated in the Northeast, Ohio Valley, Northwest, and California. Exposure analysis indicates approximately 53 million residents currently reside in high-risk zones, potentially almost doubling and tripling under 2 °C and 4 °C warming. Drought frequency also rises, with over 37% of major farmland vulnerable to multi-year droughts, raising agricultural risks. Record 2023 sea surface temperature anomalies suggest an impending extreme El Niño event, demonstrating the need to account for natural climate variability. The insights gained aim to inform decision-makers in shaping adaptation strategies and enhancing the resilience of communities in response to evolving extremes.

Flood alerts in #England have more than doubled from 18 to 50 in about an hour as #Storm #Bert sweeps the country. There's also one "flood warning" affecting rivers in Accrington and Oswaldtwistle.

Inside the byre after 4 hours of snow. We just have to let it melt away onto the concrete floor which was used to house animals, so it was laid to direct water out of the byre. Most surfaces are metal or hard plastic. We have been prepared for this all year. #Snow #Bert

Looking in through the byre door. The floor has a snow drift across it, bare at the door to about 3 inches deep in middle of the drift. Various bins, trugs, tables, etc, have snow sticking to the tops and sides..
